                                             VANILLA FLASH
                                         The Sophisticated Scent

If you have been reading my articles for awhile, you know that I am a huge lover of the vanilla scent. It can be just the one vanilla note or a blend of notes with vanilla-as long as I can get a whiff of vanilla, then I considered that to be a great accomplishment.

Many times vanilla blended with other fragrance notes, can become hidden due to the soft and sweet scent of vanilla but there is a new vanilla fragrance that was created to be worn as an adult.

VANILLA FLASH EAU DE PARFUM by Tauerville aka Andy Tauer. Andy Tauer, a FiFi Award winning perfumer did not want a super sweet vanilla that resembled a gourmand but a more spicy, earthy and robust...perhaps even a savory scent.

VANILLA FLASH EAU DE PARFUM is the fragrance for adults who understand the power of wanting to smell sophisticated yet still enjoy the scent of vanilla, the world's most popular scent in perfumes.

Mr. Tauer is a genius when it comes to composing scents that are truly realistic yet he does not take away the fun and excitement that goes with the imagination of what a masterfully skilled scent interpretates.

Fragrance notes: spices, vanilla bourbon, rose , patchouli and tobacco.

FRAGRANCE REVIEWS & NEW LAUNCHES

                                     A ROSE IS A ROSE

Well not really. Take note but to what I am saying not the fragrance notes in ROSE flash Perfume Roll-On, the new fragrance by award-winning perfumer, Andy Tauer.

Tauer created ROSE flash in his own image but creating a complete rose scent, not bits and pieces from other scents to create this. So, I am simply saying and Mr. Tauer is saying there are NO notes to reveal.

Tauer stated on his website and I am paraphrasing that this is the first fragrance from the flash collection. It is meant to be fun and shared.

It seems that Mr.Tauer wants to keep ROSE flash rather simple but there is nothing simple about a rose. It is the Queen of all flowers and I am quite sure Mr. Tauer took this matter into consideration. In fact, Mr. Tauer states that ROSE flash is the most luxurious fragrances that he has created.

This is not to say that he hasn't composed other rose scented fragrances in the Classic and Homages collection that were not done without tremendous skill and artistic persuasion but I feel we are going to be hearing a lot about ROSE flash during the FIFI AWARDS.

If you are truly into rose scented fragrances, try these other creations by Tauer Perfumes such as No.06 Incense Rose, No.08 Une Rose Chypree and No.10 Une Rose Vermeille.

ROSE flash is really reasonably priced for such as luxurious perfume but there is limitations on the amount of them sold only in Switzerland and the US for logistic reasons only.

ROSE flash comes in a 10 ml roll-on bottle with simple packaging.

It is ONLY available at www.tauerperfumes.com

What I love about a rose is it is never out of style and the perfect fit for ALL seasons. So, I will indulge in this luxury item because Andy Tauer is one of the most respected perfumers of our time.

FRAGRANCE REVIEW

                                                   PHI-une rose de Kandahar
A global obsession with the rose

I heard the phrase, "a rose is a rose" years ago but I cannot remember where I heard it. But that doesn't matter because in the perfume industry that phrase is not valid. There are some of the most beautiful roses in fragrances that come from Turkey, Bulgaria, Somalia, Arabia and other countries.

There have been a few niche fragrances that were blessed enough to incorporate a rare rose oil that is costly and precious into a divine creation.

The Afghanistan rose, mainly in the region of Nangarhar grows in a dry and rough land but produces a essence that is smooth and sublime.

I was fortunate to receive a sample of PHI-une rose de Kandahar Eau de Parfum from Jeffrey Dame of Hypoluxe Inc. This would be my first experience with the scent of rose from Afghanistan. I didn't know what to expect, so I thought of all the possibilities. Is it edgy like pink peppercorn, a little smoother but powdery like a carnation or a deep, deep scent of patchouli?

Andy Tauer, FIFI award winning perfumer has a whimsical way of expressing his creative blends that for most people comes to a pleasant surprise. I too wanted that same surprise with PHI-une rose de Kandahar and I got it.

This is a extremely smooth and quiet scent. I love how the rose oil eases its way with sublime illusions of a rose field. The more I wear it, the more of a journey it becomes.

I had this sample for a few months and I wanted to wait for the warm months before I wrote this review. Most people who are not familiar with niche and natural scents wear fragrances having the majority of rose in it, most likely synthetic in the winter months.

The beauty of niche scents is that it can be worn year around due to its fine ingredients and the time taken to compose the scent with a theory and story behind the scent.

Its such a shame that politics in the world divide us but when it comes to fragrances, there is no hate-no racism, just a pure love of natural from where ever it originates.

That is why I have my own slogan, " THE ART OF PERFUMERY transcends cultural barriers"- Felicia M Hazzard

Its the truth, there is no discrimination again a rose from India versus a rose from Bulgaria. They are both beautiful in their own right. Its here on earth for us all to enjoy equally.

PHI- une rose de Kandahar can be worn day and night and the delight and airy feeling I get from this scent could easily be a hair perfume. I say this because I sprayed a small amount in my hair and this morning when I awakened, the scent was still there as if I just sprayed it. Truly incredible.

Andy Tauer Perfumes are so equally meshed with one another. You can use two or three scents together and layer them and its comes out to be one harmonious scent of infusion delight.

What is PHI? PHI is a rare gem that is rich in natural raw materials so paired with une rose de Kandahar makes it even more rare. Due to the nature of the rose oil, there is a LIMITED AMOUNT and PHI-une rose de Kandahar may not always be available.

As soon as I wrote this, I checked and PHI-une rose de Kandahar has been SOLD OUT. There are NO samples available as well.

When will it be available? According to www.tauerperfumes.com not until November 2014!

This actually doesn't surprise me. Fragrances composed by Andy Tauer have been known to sell out!

My advise, is to check back with the website and purchase a few bottles, it will be the Holiday Season before you know it.

PHI-une rose de Kandahar is a beautiful tribute to the Afghanistan rose and culture.

CARILLON POUR un Ange by ANDY TAUER

Posted by Unknown 01 May, 2011 0 comments

                                     Lily of the Valley Day
Carillon Pour un Ange Eau de Parfum
     EXCLUSIVE interview with Andy Tauer

Lily of the Valley Day and May Day in the French tradition is a day on May 1st dedicated to offering a bouquet/sprig of lily-of-the-valley flowers (“muguet”) to loved ones.

I love the French tradition of May Day because it all started on May 1, 1561 when King Charles IX of France was given a bunch of lily of the valley flowers as a token of luck and prosperity for the coming year.

So every year on May 1st, Lily of the Valley Day has been honored and treasured with the sure sign that winter is officially over and spring has sprung.

Recently, the world celebrated the Royal Wedding of William & Catherine. It was reported that Catherine’s bouquet was covered with muguets (lily of the valley) and the perfume she wore on her wedding day featured the lily of the valley fragrant note.

What does this mean? This is the translation for LOVE. The Royal couple was wafting in the aroma of “lily of the valley” to set the tone for their marriage.

There is another fragrance that has set the tone long before the announcement of the Royal Wedding. It has been a love of the lily of valley flower every since he become a perfumer.

Master Perfumer, Andy Tauer for Tauer Perfumes (Switzerland) and the recent winner of the 2011 FIFI AWARDS UK in the niche category created CARILLON pour un  ange No.11 of the prestigious Homage Collection. CARILLON pour un ange was composed with the joy of the green floral that proclaims the symbol of natural perfumery.

Mr. Tauer took the essence of the lily of the valley flower and molded it into a vibrant and “forest treasure” that breaths freshness into the most exquisite form of a perfume.

CARILLON pour un ange features…

TOP NOTES: rose, ylang ylang, lilac, green lily of the valley accord

HEART NOTES: jasmine, leather

BASE NOTES: ambergris, moss and woods

The making of CARILLON pour un ange overwhelmed me and its precious scent sets the highest standards of perfumery that last all day.So, I wanted to learn more about it. I had the honor and privilege of asking Mr. Tauer  questions about the intricate details of the making of CARILLON pour un ange.

THE INTERVIEW

Andy, I read that it is difficult to get a large portion of concentration from the lily of the valley flower. To smell the beautiful essence, one must wait until winter is over. How did you manage to create, CARILLON pour un ange?

Indeed, there is nothing like a “natural”, botanical extract of Lily of the valley. Thus, all Lily of the valley perfumes are based on compositions, using manmade molecules and –provided we are talking about high end perfumes- natural extracts. There exist pre-made bases that you can buy, too. With the exception of a few bases that I use to replace materials of animalic origin: I do not use bases provided by that industry. On one hand, I consider it an intellectual and  a creative challenge to make my own compositions from scratch. And on the other hand: if you work with bases provided by the industry, you become dependent and you risk coming up with perfumes that smell like others.

My challenge when creating CARILLON pour un ange were the same that I face with every composition: Trying to find the right color, shape, light in order to reach a fragrant picture that reflects what I have in my mind. It is very difficult to translate this inner image and to communicate it in words is not any easier. Let me share two ways to approach this: CARRILLON pour un ange is like a day in May, I leave the house with my father, passing by the green lush gardens where Lilac is blooming. We enter the woods, with the bark of the trees still wet and cool from a gentle spring rain over night. We search for Lily of the valley. We kneel down; smell the wet musky earth, the ambra fragrance from the fir tree branches in the sun. I pick the Lily of the valley and bring it home to my mom. She is waiting for me and my father. This is peace.

My working title for CARILLON pour un ange was actually Gabriel: Gabriel like the arch angel. There is a wonderful song, called Gabriel by Lamb. It is a sad song, in a sense, and I listened to it many times when creating Carillon. There, you find the lines:

“I can fly

But I want his wings

I can shine even in the darkness

But I crave the light that he brings (…)”

Me too, I can fly, but I want and need the wings of my angel.

The lily of the valley flower is considered for spring and summer. How does a person like myself who loves this flower cope with wearing CARILLON pour un ange in the fall and winter months?

I know that perfume lovers like to categorize their fragrances. And I know the feeling in spring, when the sun brings back the colors of life and we all reach out for flowers and citrus. But, I am convinced that there can be spring every time and anywhere. Thus, do not worry about wearing Lily of the valley or other spring flowers in autumn. Actually, CARILLON pour un ange is much more than just Lily of the valley. It is spring blossoms, wet forest earth, a hint of jasmine and leather and the later work wonderful in cool winter nights. And who would not like to get a glimpse of an early spring on a grey November day?

Andy, you mention on your website and I am paraphrasing that building a fragrance with the lily of the valley flower has always been important to you. Why is composing CARILLON pour un ange is important to have in your collection?

My mother was very much in love with Diorissimo, composed by Edmond Roudnitska who is a perfumer whom I admire deeply. Thus, a Lily of the valley centered fragrance was always on my to-do list. Unfortunately, It was too late for my mother: She left this world before I finished Carillon pour un ange. I hope that she is an angel now watching us.

Lastly, Andy you are an award winner Master Perfumer! What would you say makes a great perfume? What would you say to a student who wants to make a career in perfumery?

Thank you for this question. I get a lot of e-mails from perfume lovers asking me for advice how to make a career in perfumery. I am trying to make a living by selling artisanal perfumes (which is not easy): but I am not sure whether I am the right guy to ask. Quite often, I answer that I cannot give a lot of advice as I never studied perfumery in school and that I am convinced that there is no reason to visit a perfumery school. If you wish to make a living from perfumery: Be patient and be warned. The road to success is narrow and rough. Thus, my advice usually is: Train your nose by smelling the classics, get to know your naturals, and build your patience. It will take years of smelling, experimenting, and failing until you come up with creations that speak and bloom. And do not expect a short cut, like asking a perfumer for advice.

And to answer your last question; a great perfume is a composition that is balanced, with an inner harmony, but with character. Present, with sillage, but not loud. A perfume shines from the inside and it develops on its wearer. Edmond Roudnitska, in his booklet “LE PARFUM” (of the series Que sais-je), also spoke about a “choc sensorial”; for me this means: A great perfume will touch us when we smell it the first time. It will evoke a reaction and it will invite us to a journey, through fragrant lands, and we will happily join.

Andy is has been truly an honor to speak with you. I've learned so much in just a short amount of time.
Thank you and I wish you continued success with Tauer Perfumes.

Thank you, Felicia.
