The Modern Rose
A Dozen Valentine's Day Fragrances

No two roses are alike. This couldn't be more the truth since the revolution of the rose scent in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

A rose scented perfume from the times of Ancient Egypt where the first perfumers were created to recent history in perfumery, only came in a singular note (the traditional rose). But now the fascination with the scent of rose is modern, bold, innovative and complex.

The traditional rose scent has taken on a modern fragrance with the blending of several rose scents and woody notes and lively citrus compositions to a gourmand-sweet and sensual.

I love the new version. I always felt the traditional rose, although it is the Queen of the floral but yet boring and predictable.

The modern rose scents are now for both women and men! This was unheard of centuries ago but not anymore, Fragrances can be shared by both men and women and the fragrance industry is reaping the benefits at the cash register because fragrances are now allowed to be expressive without inhibitions.

In honor of Valentine's Day on February 14th, I have curated 12 of the most unique, vivid and adventurous rose fragrances that I feel represent the modern age of Queen Rose.

There are thousands of rose scented fragrances that are produced each year. However I cannot nor do I have the time to review each of them but this will give you a start into the adventurous world of rose perfumes that represent this day and age.

Whips and Roses by Kerosene- The ultra-modern version of the rose is composed by Midwestern perfumer, John Pegg. It is a floral woody musk fragrance featuring bergamot, blood orange, rose, jasmine, gardenia, iris sandalwood, musk and leather. It is composed for women and men.

Rubis Rose' by DSH Perfumes-The ultra high glamour fragrance was inspired by the natural beauty of actress, Elizabeth Taylor and the fabulous Ruby Suite necklace by Cartier given to Taylor by her third husband, Michael Todd. It provides a luscious red raspberry note, pink pepper with frankincense, myrrh, guaicwood and a touch of oak moss. Rubis Rose' is composed by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz.

Rose Noir by Byredo-This is a lovely compliment to the red rose, a symbol of love. Rose Noir gives provides a dark and intense moment with a citrus moment. It is wild and gives an animalist quality. Composed with grapefruit, freesia, Rose Damascena, cistus, moss and musk. Ben Gorham was a professional basketball player to the creative genius of the perfume brand Byredo.

Tobacco Rose by Papillon Artisan- This fragrance is floral but it is for both women and men! It combines earthy notes of oak moss, ambergris and peru balsam with a Bulgarian rose and the Rose de mai with an enhancement of beeswax. Tobacco Rose is composed by Liz Moores who is located in London, England.

Kashan Rose by The Different Company- This fragrance is surrounded around the Persian Rose that is celebrated at the festival of the rose in the city of Kashan. its a fragrance that is laced with roses that is surrounded with a spicy blend of sage, litchi, pink pepper and cardamom. The floral continues with blends of hawthorn and peony and lastly its base deepens with ambrette, sandalwood and musk. Kashan Rose is composed by Emilie Coppermann.

Wild Roses by Aftelier Perfumes- If you love sprawling gardens with neatly manicured landscapes, then Wild Roses is for you! It evokes the imagination and memories with the newest modern version of the rose that combines the crème de la crème of ingredients such as rose Co2, helitotrope, bergamot, geranium, damask rose, apricot, pimento, taif rose, tarragon, vanilla and patchouli. This is an all natural fragrance created by multi-award winning perfumer, Mandy Aftel who was nominated for the prestigious FiFi Award by the Fragrance Foundation.

Imogene Rose by Lush-This scent is love struck using the true and original rose in the most natural way. Lush is a British company that provide the most innovative products. Imogene Rose is a delicate fragrance with a baby powder aroma. Crushed petals were used in the most delicate way while rose oil, rose absolute, basil, bergamot, vetivert, ambrette seed, tonka and orris to provide a down to earth ending for women and men. The perfumer is Simon Constantine, who is the son of the CEO of Lush, Mark Constantine.

Rose Anonyme Cologne Absolue by Atelier Cologne- This fragrance is centered around the Turkish rose that resonates with sparkling notes of the rose and spicy and tantalizing smoky scents that is seductive. Rose Anonyme Cologne Absolue is created with the finest ingredients made in France. This composition has a combination of bergamot from Calabria, ginger from China, Turkish rose essence, Turkish rose absolue, incense from Somalia, velvet oud accord, patchouli from Indonesia, papyrus from India and benzoin from Laos. Its composed by Jerome Epinette.

Flowerbomb en Rose by Viktor & Rolf-This is the "happy" scent! Its created to be the lighter version of the original Flowerbomb. Flowerbomb en Rose opens with nectar and citrus. This fragrance is for women only and the perfumer is unknown.

Rouge Nocturne by Terry de Gunzburg- This is a scent centered around a dark rose aroma which puts it in the Chypre floral category. The story behind this fragrance is sensual and mystery that features the damask rose, turkey red rose and patchouli. Rouge Nocturne is for women only and the perfumer is Michel Almairac.

Rose Nobile by Acqua di Parma-This is an Italian scented rose scent. Why? Because the company Acqua di Parma is located in Italy. Rose Nobile is refreshing and centered around the Centifolia rose with a signature style of citrus and dark combinations. Its composition is created with bergamot, mandarin, black pepper, citruses, lily of the valley, violet, peony, cedar, ambergris and musk. This is made for women only and the perfumer is Francois Demachy.

Rose de Nuit by Serge Lutens- This is an exclusive fragrance that is found in the Les Salons du Palais Royal Shiseido. It is dark and intense with animalistic rose inspired ingredients. A fragrance for both women and men. A scent to enjoy for a late night rendezvous. Rose de Nuit is composed by Gilles Romey.

The world famous fashion house, Chanel introduces a new fragrance and it is called, Misia.

Misia is created in honor of CoCo Chanel good friend, Misia Sert.

Misia is the latest fragrance to be included in the Les Exclusifs de Chanel collection. It represents the modern woman who is free and confident.

This feminine fragrances is composed by Olivier Polge, the son of the world famous master perfumer Jacques Polge.

Mr. Polge has been the in-house perfumer for the house of Chanel since 1978.

Misia is a powdery floral scent with a woody balsamic rose aroma.

The luscious ingredients are violet, iris orris root, Turkish rose, benzoin from Laos

and tonka bean, rose from Grasse and sandalwood.

Unfortunately, Misia will NOT be available in time for Valentine's Day! It is set to launch in March 2015.

Misia will become available in two sizes, 75 ml and 200 ml eau de toilette.

It's coming up roses with the celebrate of the Rose de Mai (May Rose) in the month of May 2015 by L'Artisan Parfumeur.

L'Artisan Parfumeur will launch Rose Privee, a new floral fragrances developed by master perfumer, Berrand Duchaufour and his apprentice, Stephane Bakouche.

The celebration will not start until the month of May, so sorry for the non-availability for Valentine's Day but don't worry there will be enough roses to go around.

Exploring the World of BALMAIN for Hair

For the last several months I have been researching the world of hair products. Since, I lost my hair to chemotherapy treatments in 2013 my hair has started to grow back and I wanted ways to find nourishing and enriching hair products to maintain my new hair growth.

I also was looking for hair products that not only was good for my hair but smelled great too!

While researching I came upon a hair product by the world famous fashion house, BALMAIN. I didn't know that BALMAIN offered a hair product, so I found an email address and I asked if I could get a sample to try and I would write about my experience with it.

BALMAIN hair products division sent back a gracious email a few days later indicating their interest and would send a bottle at no charge.

A few weeks later I received my package and after washing my hair the next morning I used BALMAIN Silk Perfume. I sprayed my hair three times which I found out that two times was more than enough due to the light and airy scent that blossomed into a fragrance spray.

My hair wasn't dry but slightly oily which is best for my hair. There was no after effects of sticky and hardness to the hair. My hair was very soft with a brilliance of sheen. No chemical after effects just pure argan and silk proteins that worked wonderfully in this product.

My bathroom smelled so beautiful and it filled the room with a scent of soft but a luxury scent that is good enough for a baby's skin.

I used it each day and found my hair to be very soft and never dry. BALMAIN Silk Perfume is truly designed with the health of the hair in mind and not solely on its brand image.

I usually do not write about major brand companies but I am more than thrilled to write this article!

Glamorous Books of Scent

'Tis the Season' According to analysts the fragrance industry is doing quite well in the form of sales this holiday season. By sales, I mean the niche market. According to a Reuters report in the December 14, 2014 edition of The Economic Times more and and more consumers are spending their money on quality fragrances composed by perfumers who bring the luxury world of perfumery a sense of value, pride and amazing talent.

The niche market of perfumery is creative and each and every perfume that I have experienced brings its own story to the scent of creation.

The fragrance industry to me is not just about the actual scent, bottle and packaging but the knowledge and innovation. Which brings me to the topic of books. Not just any books but- fragrance books.

I have learned and have admired so many of the bloggers and perfumers who have put their passion and experienceof fragrance onto paper in the form of a practical hands-on book, a memoir or a fictional novel.

This season, I have received emails from best-selling author and entrepreneur, Jan Moran who incredibly has written several books on fragrance and beauty that should not go unnoticed this holiday season.

My first encounter with Jan Moran was in the year 2000 with her first book Fabulous Fragrances II: A Guide to Prestige Perfumes for Women and Men published by Rizzoli USA.

I loved the thick hardcover book that features a blazing red cover with a gorgeous lady on the front of it wearing a beautiful red dress.

I wanted to know more about Jan Moran and how her passion for fragrances became a book for us to seek as a guide to the world's finest perfumes.

Since that time, Jan Moran has written several best-selling books that reached the charts of the New York Times.

Scent of Triumph (A novel of Perfume and Passion) will be released in March 2015 from St. Martin's Press. Scent of Triumph is a historical fiction novel based on the life of a French perfumer during the 1940's.

It gets better with the release of FLAWLESS (A Hostile Beauty Series Novel) Book 1 and the second book in the series with BEAUTY MARK (A Hostile Beauty Series Novel).

Jan uses her rare talent to bring exciting stories to the lives of perfumer lovers and beauty product junkies a glimpse into the world of glamour that seems and suspense that would rivel any popular television show seen on prime time.

What a tremendous gift for the Holiday season and throughout the year to give a collection of books written by award-winning author Jan Moran.

I am now a published author and now I am writing about perfume thanks to my admiration of Jan Moran and how we can continue the love of fragrance by reading a book in our spare time, while exercising on the treadmill, while having a vanilla latte at Starbucks and my favorite after the children have gone to bed for the evening.

Fragrance Belles-Lettres Est 2009 CHICAGO

The word "belles lettres" is a French phrase meaning "beautiful or "fine writing. Since this is a term to describe a category of writing, this will pertain to my passion about fragrances. I will review niche,natural, artisan and designer perfumes from all over the world. I write with passion but will use my journalistic skills that I obtained in college. Not only will I feature fragrances but I will feature new books on fragrances/perfumes, fragrance events and interview authors and perfumers.
