SPECIAL EDITION: NATURAL PERFUME REVIEWS

There are so many new and exciting natural perfumes being created that it can be a little overwhelming but I believe in reviewing those that capture the essence and spirit of perfumery that leaves room for more interpretations.

In this issue, I will focus on four natural perfumers who are blessed with amazing talents in uplifting the spirit through scents. The five perfumers/perfumeries are Rodney Hughes, Shelley Waddington, Sophia DuToit and Nikki Skerritt and the House of Matriarch.

EN VOYAGE PERFUMES owner and perfumer, Shelley Waddington collaborated with Master Distiller and author, Dabney Rose to create an eau de parfum that is a fusion of a spicy rose scent and a mixture of floral water composed by Dabney Rose to give a fabulous duo of L' EMBLEM ROUGE EAU DE PARFUM and L' EAU DE EMBLEM ROUGE (floral water).

L' EMBLEM ROUGE EAU DE PARFUM is the first perfume in the En Voyage's new RUBICON COLLECTION that is of 100% natural scents.

This perfume is simply bursting with the world's finest notes that overwhelms me with its elegant and masterfully crafted take on some of the most difficult scents to work on.

I simply love fragrances that are abundantly clear that using many fragrance notes is simply a challenge and skill that is welcome and Shelley and Dabney excellently makes this statement so true.

What a brilliant way to introduce a partnership. I truly enjoyed Dabney's approach to creating L'EAU DE EMBLEM that is to be paired with L'EMBLEM ROUGE by using Bourbon roses that are lush and fruity along with fresh roses. There was a process called "double distillation" used to make the scent a bit more rosy. This process was then poured over the distilling rose petals and there you have FLORAL WATER. Simply amazing!

I am not one for the standard rose scent and L'EMBLEM ROUGE EAU DE PARFUM  is far from standard. It is extraordinary in the grandest sense "scent" of the word.

I love the whimsical spicy nugent that flairs up right in the middle of the scent that keeps you holding your wrist to your nose. It is intoxicating and it is an elegant approach to sensuality.

L' EMBLEM ROUGE EAU DE PARFUM features TOP NOTES: cassie, mace, cinnamon, bitter orange, juicy grapefruit, green pepper, Iranian galbanum, violet and cistus   HEART NOTES: Iranian Rose Otto, ylang-ylang, heliotrope, French Jasmine Sambac, violet and honey    BASE NOTES: guaiacwood, sandalwood, copaiba, vetiver, cedarwood virginia, toul balsam, benzoin siam, tonka, vanilla and ambergris.

How I simply love the excitement of discovering a perfumery that is full of so much potential. The HOUSE OF MATRIARCH,  a young perfumery established in 2009 is taking the natural perfume industry by leaps and bounds.

Christi Meschell
The HOUSE OF MATRIARCH statement is to bring the GOLD standard back into perfumery. The nose and owner behind this all female staff is the lovely and distinguished, Christi Meshell. Ms. Meshell is the  daughter of a herbalist and her natural talent in this field brings the HOUSE OF MATRIARCH into full bloom  with services offered such as Private Label and Bespoke.

According to MATRIARCH perfumes, it is specifically designed to restore the connection with the Matriarch. You know, Mother Earth.

I simply feel the energy from this company each and every time I go on their website. It breathes a freshness in the air and I like that. To me, it seems that yes the HOUSE OF MATRIARCH is very serious about creating luxurious in the form of the old world tradition of natural perfumery. However, this perfumery is so open to new and exciting ideas and letting the imagination roar with endless possibilities not from just their perspective but in their offering of Private Label and Bespoke services.

I am sitting on the edge of my chair as I write about them because I know deep down inside that the HOUSE OF MATRIARCH will provide not only the best but stellar fragrances that will be the talk of the town.

Congratulations to a NEW fragrance launch with  CARMINE that debuted on October 1, 2011. It is a rare and brave new perfume created in the ancient art but only should be worn by those who consider themselves connoisseurs of luxury and natural fragrances.

Why do you think CARMINE is considered a brave fragrance? For me the most recognizable ingredients come from Africa and Egypt which are founding motherlands of perfumery. Perfumery in Africa goes back a lot longer than what is reported. I will further discuss this issue with my review of fragrances by  natural perfumer, Sophia Du Toit.

These costly and rare ingredients are not found in most fragrances and that is why I feel it is considered brave. The HOUSE OF MATRIARCH took this challenge and succeeded.

The HOUSE OF MATRIARCH collection consist of ALPHA, DESTINY, MATRIARCH and SKIN DEEP, too.

If you noticed I have not review these fragrances yet but I had to introduce this perfumery because they are going to set a new standard in natural perfumery that will make us all very proud. Cheers!

" Redefining the High Life"

                     A Champagne Diva

My next installation honoring GLOBAL CHAMPAGNE DAY 2011 for the  entire month of October is about a book. It is not just a book but a New York Times bestseller.

The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire And The Woman Who Ruled It by Tilar J. Mazzeo. This remarkable book gives an elegant glimpse into the life of Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin who became a widow("veuve" means widow in French) at the young age of 27 during the early 1800's.

Barbe-Nicole took the wine business and turned it into an world famous empire that is known for its yellow label on bottles.

The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire And The Woman Who Ruled It takes you into the life of Barbe-Nicole who becomes stronger in mind, body and spirit each day as she tries to keep the family business in the region of Champagne afloat with her use of skills and with no formal training.

If you know anything about this incredible story, Barbe-Nicole triumphs and Tilar J. Mazzeo has a way of using a crescendo effect in writing in this book that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Barbe-Nicole was not the only woman who ran a champagne house but it differentially tell you the strength that these women have and in the wine industry, women were an intricate part of its success either by running a business or in the advertisement that featured women.

In this segment, I will also review several champagne inspired perfumes with one of them actually has a glimpse of REAL Cristal champagne in it.

CHAMPAGNE DE BOIS- If you are heading to  Napa Valley, California for a wine tasting event, while in California go to Healdsburg to continue your fine wine retreat with a lovely champagne inspired perfume, CHAMPAGNE DE BOIS by Sonoma Scent Studio. CHAMPAGNE DE BOIS is natural fragrance that transcend on a woodsy, sweet and spicy scent that ushers in with a soft sillage. It redefines classic with its own style like no other.

Perfumer and owner of Sonoma Scent Studio, Laurie Erickson brings a freshness to perfumery that represents the state of California and the entire perfume industry with the true meaning of the Art of Perfumery. Ms. Erickson continues to become a Rising Star with simplistic style with an elegant decorum.

 sonomascentstudio.com

AMANDA- AMANDA by Amanda Lepore, the  internatonal transsexual icon celebrity recognized for her stellar skin, red satin lipstick and sexy prescence launched her first lavish fragrance, AMANDA in 2008.

AMANDA Eau de Parfum evokes all that is glitz and glamour and it speaks from the heart and spirit of Amanda Lepore. This was a LIMITED EDITION with only 5,000 bottles created with over 1000 Swarovksi crystals and a blush-colored satin atomizer.

AMANDA is composed by Master and Award-Winning perfumer, Christophe Laudamiel. Amanda wanted this fragrance to be a masterpiece so some of the world's finest and most expensive ingredients were chosen.

One of these ingredients is real Cristal champagne. It was added to make AMANDA the "toast of the town" and this further explains the pop diva's high end lifestyle.

Other notes featured are TOP NOTES: citruses, mandarin orange, strawberry, Cristal champagne, cucumber   MIDDLE NOTES: African orange flower, tuberose, violet    BASE NOTES: amber, orris root

AMANDA is still available for purchase and can be done so at Artware Editions (artwareeditions.com) for a 4.25 FL OZ/125 ML $550.00 coffret.

CHAMPAGNE PEACH- CHAMPAGNE PEACH #914 by Memoire Liquide is a bespoke perfumery own by sisters Robin Coe-Hutshing and Jennifer Coe. Memoire Liquide was established in 2006 and since then they provide scents that are enriching and personable. Since this segment is dedicated to champagne, there is one fragrance in particular that I find most creative. CHAMPAGNE PEACH #914 is the scent of champagne and peaches. It is inspired by the Bellini cocktail.

What is a Bellini cocktail? According to Wikipedia, it is a long drink cocktail that originated in Venice. It is a mixture of sparkling wine (traditionally Prosecco) and peach puree. It is often served at celebrations and it has become one of Italy's most popular cocktails.

This sounds delicious! What an elegant way to serve up a scent inspired by a cocktail and it give perfumery a modern twist to the most celebrate wine in the world.

Memoire Liquide custom fragrance mixing bars can be found at two locations in the US. The studio at Fred Segal in Santa Monica and Henri Bendel in New York.

Maria Murphy
SPA SPACASSO is a leading organic skincare company located in Des Moines, Iowa. It was established in 2005 by Founder & CEO, Maria Murphy who envisioned a skincare line that would be a safe and elegant for men and women.

Since then, Maria has decided to broaden the product line with an organic parfum dedicated to working women. Maria created the parfum but she could not decide on a name for it.  After a few months and a scent event contest was held for submissions for the name of this parfum, a winner was revealed.

Victoria Palumbo
Victoria Palumbo won by submitting  TRAVAILLER FEMME SENTEUR (means Travailler Femme "working women" and Senteur pour Lieu de Travail means "workplace fragrance" in French for women. This fragrance is ready to be launched but first here are the details of TRAVAILLER FEMME SENTEUR. It features TOP NOTES: Australian sandalwood oilMIDDLE NOTES: citrus, fruits, vanilla bean  BASE NOTES: tuberose, orchid and organic soy

What makes this velvety and smooth fragrance so regal is too to one of the most important ingredients and that is soy. TRAVAILLER FEMME  SENTEUR is very soft and sweet but not too much of a fuss because the idea is to wear this scent in the workplace.

It will not cause an allergic reaction and your co-workers will not be bothered by this elegant and warm scent. TRAVAILLER FEMME SENTEUR is most appropriate for work and after hours. Just had stilettos and pearls and you are good to go. Plus it lasts on your skin for hours!

CHAMPAGNE INSPIRED PERFUMES by Etat Libre d'Orange

THE ART OF CHAMPAGNE...The Scents of  Celebration:Champagne Inspired Perfumes

It is a fact...real Champagne comes from France. This is not my saying but leading experts and generations of wine houses in the regions of France have spent countless hours and choosing the best grapes-the best Champagne grapes for their wines.

What are Champagne grapes? According to a website, wiseGeek (wisegeek.com) "champagne grapes are the name given to a type of grape, the Corinth and should not be confused with the various groups to make wine in their champagne region of France. Champagne grapes are also commonly used as currants. These grapes are the smallest of all the seedless grapes and are the most popular for that reason".

These precious commodities (Champagne grapes) are usually very dark and sweet that burst with flavor and that is why these wines from the French regions taste so good.

Well like all other countries wines are produced there too and I am sure they feel that their wines are equally tasty. I am quite sure they do. I have had my sure of wines from other countries and they have tasted wonderful to me. I guess the argument could continue to say that the best perfumes come from France, especially from the region of Grasse-the capital of perfumery.

This is true, for the longest in the history of perfumery did France dominate the choice for fine perfumes but now there are many fine perfumes made all over the globe and I have had my sure of some of the most fantastic fragrances from Italy, Spain, Ireland and the United States.

I am a Fragrance Editor and I cherish the moment that I can sniff a unique creation composed by a natural or niche perfumer. I live for those days which in my life is EVERY DAY!

To give respect where respect is due, my first review of champagne inspired perfumes will begin with a French niche perfumery called Etat Libre d'Orange.

Etat Libre d'Orange has three different fragrances that are made with champagne featuring champagne accord and a liqeur of brandy of champagne.

JOSEPH BAKER (Editions des Sens). Editions des Sens is a new company and Le Parfum Josephine Baker represents this line in a gourmand scent. This fragrance is dedicated to the famous dancer from the beginning of the 20th century.

Le Parfum Josephine Baker is a gourmand with citrus and spicy notes that represents Josephine Baker sensuous and passionate dancing on stage.

Le Parfum Josephine Baker features grapefruit, champagne accord, jasmine, curry jungle essence, black pepper. labdanum, sandalwood and lorenox.

This exotic and regal burst of champagne was created by Cecile Matton and launched in 2010 for women only.

VRAIE BLOND is a seductive and vivacious scent oozing with the hips of a shapely women who is platinum and dressed in sequined lame'. A take on Marilyn Monroe the beauty goddess of the screen.

This intoxicating scent for women features aldehyde, liqeur of brandy of champagne, rose, peach of grapevine, white pepper, myrrh and patchouli.

VRAIE BLOND  was created by Antoine Maisondieu in 2006.

The essence of champagne inspired perfumes continues with the last creation by Etat Libre d'Orange with BENDELIRIOUS. This is a feminine fragrance made in colloboration with the iconic New York retailer, Henri Bendel.

BENDELIRIOUS inspired by the Bendel Girl who is smart, playful, always looking beautiful, hip, interesting and of course, sexy!

It is a floral-fruity scent filled with fun and elegant notes such as Top Notes: cherry lollipop, grapefruit, champagne accord  Middle Notes: violet leaf, iris, absolute, iris butter   Base Notes: vetiver, musk, leather accord, tonka bean.

BENDELIRIOUS, is the house fragrance for Henri Bendel that was launched in 2009 and created by Antoine Lie.

Etat Libre d'Orange was established by Mr. Etienne de Swardt who was formerly a perfumer for Givenchy. Etat Libre d'Orange debuted in 2006 and since then, they have a cult following worldwide.

Etat Libre d'Orange is not only a perfumery but they are indeed a perfumery that represents The Art of Perfumery with passion and fun. Cheers to these three fragrances who reign with the toast of the bubbly.

This series and other reviews of champagne inspired perfumes is in celebration of the forthcoming GLOBAL CHAMPAGNE DAY 2011 hosted by  consumer champagne expert and author, Jayne Powell aka Champagne Jayne that will take place virtually on Friday, October 28, 2011.
