NATIONAL MACAROON DAY

REGLISSE NOIRE: A Chic & Sexy Gourmand

Today (May 31st) marks National Macaroon Day in the United States and what a treat it is!

I simply love the light, baked confection described as either small cakes or meringue-like cookies.

The macaroon “le macaron” in French (pronounced mah-kah-rone) is a sweet little cookie type that comes in multiple colors with a plush marshmallow/meringue filling and then it is protected with another cookie at the bottom.

It is sweet but not overly sweet and when it is baked to perfection each incredible ingredient melts in your mouth when cooked at the proper temperature.

This reminds me of another delicacy in the form of a gourmand eau de toilette.

REGLISSE NOIRE Eau de Toilette is a tempting tasteful aroma that uses the finest organic notes in a gourmand fragrance.

It is a sophisticated chic eau de toilette made with the essence of the French macaroons that came to France in 1533 with the pastry chefs of Queen Catherine de Medici, wife of King Henry II.

REGLISSE NOIRE features…Top Notes: White pepper, ozone, mint, shiso leaf

Heart Notes: Star anise, ginger, licorice, cocoa

Base Notes: Patchouli, cedar wood, vanilla, vetiver, and musk

Ms. Buchanan is not just satisfied with the scent but REGLISSE NOIRE has to be presented in a beautiful bottle.

The REGLISSE bottle is refillable and has a sleek and sexy vintage bulb atomizer that gravitates to the bygone era.

I like going into a French pastry shop and when I order multi-color macaroons to go, my experience is like an operetta.

First, there is a beautiful ornate box layered with wax paper. The colorful macaroons are placed gently in the box side by side like a rainbow. The lid is put on very carefully and then the pastel color ribbon is placed over the entire box and slowly the ribbon is tied and then you have “presentation”.

Jessica September Buchanan
Ms. Buchanan grew up in Canada and then moved to Grasse, France to study perfumery at the prestigious Grasse Institute of Perfumery. So, Ms. Buchanan has been trained at one of the finest schools and she took her studies very seriously and by wearing REGLISSE NOIRE, you are getting the gift of “presentation”. It is the beautiful scent given in a vintage designed bottle that is the signature design of 1000FLOWERS. Its presentation, is the French way.

REGLISSE NOIRE is lovely presentation of black licorice.

It stays at the center of the heart and all the other notes are swept with a husky note of patchouli and musk for stability that makes a great scent for men, too.

So celebrate today with a French macaroon and the fragrance of REGLISSE NOIRE. Remember, it is the presentation that counts!

To celebrate National Macaroon Day, I spoke to Jessica September Buchanan about REGLISSE NOIRE. Ms. Buchanan expressed her joy in creating it.

                 THE INTERVIEW

Hi Jessica and thank you for spending time with me today.

You’re very welcome- it’s my pleasure!

First, Jessica when did it become a reality that you would own a perfume company and launch your very first fragrance line?

I have been developing my company since the mid 90’s, so being an entrepreneur was always a priority for me. I began by selling pure essential oils under my own label in 1996, and then slowly developed a collection of natural cosmetics that were aromatherapy based. Eventually this passion was to become focused in the direction of natural perfumery. After my time spent studying in France, I decided to devote myself entirely to a life path of refining my skills in the perfumed art.

Who are your mentor(s) in the perfume industry? The person(s) who inspired you and guided your career?

I have had many mentors along the way. While in France, not only did we have great teachers in our school, but I completed 2 internships (in Mane et Fils and Robertet), in large perfume houses in the Grasse region. During these sejours, I met and was taught by various perfumers, evaluators, chemists, and marketing specialists. I have also been greatly inspired by some of the masters of the perfumed art- those living and those who have passed on. I am very inspired by the teachings and philosophies of Edmond Roudnitska, by the creation style of Jean Claude Ellena (Hermes), and by the classic teachings of Jean Carles. My latest inspiration, a perfumer whom I admire greatly and who I actually pray to for guidance now and then, is Earnest Beaux, the perfumer who created, amongst many other fragrances- Chanel 5. That era, the 20’s and 30’s of perfumery is a fascinating time and the fragrances that were created then are, in my opinion, exquisite.

Jessica how did you come up with the idea of REGLISSE NOIRE EAU DE TOILETTE? Did it start with the fragrance notes?

I began with one raw material actually- Helional. I was fascinated with this material, by its modernity and transparence. I wanted to explore the idea of balancing opposites, of old and new, natural and ‘high-tech’, masculine and feminine. Mostly, I wanted to find a way to explore the place of connection where opposites meet. So to counter-balance Helional, the concept I chose was black licorice, and Liquorice Allsorts in particular. These old-fashioned candies also have personal meaning to me and are associated with my childhood. I decided to write a scent story that explored a merging of past memory with the present, and of familiar with new discovery, of technology and mysticism.

You describe REGLISSE NOIRE as “A CHIC SEXY GOURMAND”. Is this due to the Black Licorice?

Reglisse Noire holds notes of cocoa, spices and vanilla in addition to the black licorice- so as much as it can be considered a gourmand fragrance- it is not sugary nor a singular literal licorice scent. The perfume is an interpretation of licorice, while remaining sophisticated and elegant. There is a sexiness and sensuality as well, since the perfume is a warm and close ‘skin scent’, rich in wood and musks- one has to lean in close to fully appreciate it.

What does 1000 FLOWERS represent?

1000 Flowers represents the idea of limitlessness in flowers. It is associated with the Eastern concept of the thousand petalled lotus that can symbolize higher consciousness and freedom from illusion. The most beautiful perfumes on the planet are created by flowers- and flowers have been held in the highest esteem as expressions of love and celebration since the dawn of time. My company name pays homage to all that beauty.

Jessica, the packaging is simply beautiful! What is it about the packaging of the bygone era that inspires you to replicate it?

That’s very kind of you to say. Thank you. I worked for a long time to find a packaging solution that would be a thing of beauty to be kept, rather than just being thrown away like most packaging in the world. I have a small collection of old cigar boxes and I suddenly realized that this was exactly the idea I wanted to capture for my fragrance packaging. I also saw many examples of beautiful traditional fragrance and cosmetic containers in the perfume museums in Grasse. I spent most of the summer of 2010 working on the designs and prototypes of these boxes. Most people don’t realize that I do all the work by hand to bring each piece from raw cedarwood to the finished product.

Lastly, Jessica what is the message of REGLISSE NOIRE? What impression should it have on your customers?

Reglisse Noire is about fun. I wanted to play a bit and draw attention away from all the seriousness in the world. We are all far too serious and we could all do with a bit of ‘lightening up’! At the same time I have deep respect for classic perfumery, so I didn’t want to create some light confectionary cavity-inducing perfume. Therefore Reglisse is an elegant and well-constructed fragrance created with the best quality raw materials (organic cedarwood and wild French fennel for example). It’s possible to explore irreverence and play with finesse and sensuality !

LA BELLE HELENE EAU DE PARFUM by MDCI

Posted by Unknown 21 May, 2011 0 comments

                                    LA BELLE HELENE

A Paring of Pears: Music & Dessert
                             A Dream Date

I love the city of Chicago, especially in the spring time. When the temperature is around 78-80 degrees and on a Friday night you will find lots of people at outdoor cafes, walking on Michigan Avenue with bright lights illuminating from designer shops and then there are those wonderful stage plays from many theaters in Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

The Goodman Theatre in downtown Chicago is known for Tony award winning plays but surrounding the Goodman Theatre are chic cafes that display mouthwatering desserts. It becomes even more of a picture perfect evening in Chicago with the brightly lit stars hovering in the sky; deep into the dark blue aura like a Vincent Van Gogh's STARRY NIGHT painting.

This is the reason; LA BELLE HELENE EAU DE PARFUM by Parfums MDCI is an inspiration to me. It combines the art of perfumery, with the delicacy of food art and a delightful rendition of an operetta.

Betrand Duchafour
LA BELLE HELENE is a work of culinary art with a gourmand essence not too sweet because Master Perfumer, Betrand Duchafour wants to leave room for the imagination.

 Poires Belle-Helene

The inspiration of LA BELLE HELENE EAU DE PARFUM romantic name comes from the classic French dessert Poires (Pears Belle-Helene) invented in the late 19th century by Auguste Escoffier, the first celebrity chef and named after Offenbach’s 1864 operetta, a spoof on the abduction of Helene of Troy.

Betrand Duchafour carefully and precisely constructed each note in LA BELLE HELENE with the scents that evoke poached pears with a chocolate sauce dripping with the essence of citrus. The musical notes in LA BELLE HELENE describes the flow of tunes made for a night of glitz and glamour.

osmanthus
Once you apply LA BELLE HELENE on your skin, you immediately sense the osmanthus absolute. This beautiful fruity-floral oil is complex but definitely the wise choice for this eau de parfum. Mr. Duchafour was correct in using this very expensive absolute to reveal its jammy apricot and leather facets that leave you begging for more. A mouthwatering masterpiece!

LA BELLE HELENE features pear accord, aldehydes, tangerines, lime blossom, rose, essence, osmanthus absolute, ylang-ylang, Madagascar orris butter, hawthorn, Mirabelle plum, myrrh, vetivier Haiti, patchouli, cedar Virginia, amber, oak moss, absolute, white musks, sandalwood, licorice-wood.

Now, I can understand why there would be a war over Helen of Troy. I would fight too but only over  Poires(Pears Belle-Helene) dessert and LA BELLE HELENE EAU DE PARFUM!

BETROTHAL PERFUME BY GROSSMITH LONDON

Posted by Unknown 20 May, 2011 2 comments

                                             BETROTHAL

The fragrance that celebrates the Queens of England

ESXENCE- ‘The Scent of Excellence’ is an exhibition that takes place each year in Milan and showcases some of the world’s finest niche perfumes.

This year was no exception with breaking news of new fragrance launches that would be shown at ESXENCE, but the knowledge of new fragrance launches could not steal the show to the upcoming ROYAL wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton.
Wedding dress of Princess, Mary of Teck

There was much speculation as to who would design Kate’s dress and then on April 29th that was revealed. But before their royal wedding there was a royal engagement that took place in 1893.

It was the engagement of Princess May and Prince George, Duke of York who had an arranged marriage but despite that, May and George was deeply in loved and eventually married.

Vintage BETROTHAL PERFUME
During that time, there was a talented young man who was known for making beautiful fragrances with the use of natural ingredients from Grasse. John Grossmith established the house of Grossmith London in 1853. It was established in time for him to create a fragrance for the nuptials of Princess May and George, the Duke of York.

Mr. Grossmith created BETROTHAL Perfume, a romantic and luscious floral topped with majestic warm and woody notes. The passion of Mr. Grossmith still exist in the remake of BETROTHAL with the same momentum for a ROYAL wedding. However, this one is for the upcoming engagement and wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton.

BETROTHAL for the 21st is made with the world’s finest ingredients that are befitting a ROYAL wedding and a Princess for the new generation.

BETROTHAL is a modern scent based on the original formula and features citrus, rose, jasmine, ylang-ylang, neroli, vetiver, warm woods and vanilla.

BETROTHAL breathes regal in every way. It has a fixed powdery scent that lies politely at the core with rose and jasmine scent fusing into one and evoking sublime elegance. The warm woods add stability that represents "stability in a marriage". Vanilla highlights the moment with sweet dreams of a royal wedding that is historic and a bright outlook for the future and all of that comes in a gorgeous Baccarat crystal perfume bottle. It has a distinctive pink and silver label with a cap of the highest craftsmanship that references the refine look to the original 1893 designs.

Duke & Duchess of Cambridge
BETROTHAL PERFUME is for historic and families of legacy and speaking of legacy, the wife of the British King automatically becomes the queen. So, that means that Catherine aka Kate Middleton will one day become England's sixth Queen Catherine!

So who would not want to follow in those footsteps if possible, but if it is not possible for you or me, then follow in the footsteps in memory of John Grossmith. A man who man a lifelong committement of creating beautiful fragrances for meaningful moments in all of our lives.

ANTHONY & CLEOPATRA: A LOVE AFFAIR

           Radiantly Romantic Eau de Parfum

                    The Fragrance of Ancient Love

Anthony and Cleopatra are among the most famous couples in history. Unfortunately their story ended tragically but the legacy of love between Anthony and Cleopatra lives on.

Cleopatra was an Egyptian queen who married Marc Anthony (Latin: Marcus Antonius) after Julius Caesar was assassinated.

Cleopatra was born in Alexandra, Egypt and Marc Anthony was born in Rome, Roman Republic. Both from two different worlds but yet their love for one another is immortal.

To carry on this type of love, means to express it creatively in a way that everyone can understand it and doing it the way it would have been appreciated in Ancient Egypt.

The act of making perfume was considered an art form in Ancient Egypt. The craftsperson was both women and men with perfume being mainly for the elite classes typically used by Kings and in this case, a Queen. Who was not only beautiful but showered herself in aromas that cast a spell on Marc Anthony.

Daniel Vaudd
Daniel Vaudd (pronounced ‘vode’); Perfumer, Cosmetic Scientist and owner of House of Vaudd in London, UK brilliantly composed RADIANTLY ROMANTIC EAU DE PARFUM  inspired by the great romance of Queen Cleopatra and Marc Anthony. The essence of this fragrance “captures the radiance of the Egyptian sun and Cleopatra’s love affair with Rome.”

Mr. Vaudd exquisitely includes high-grade ingredients that represent the birthplace of Marc Anthony with the absolutes that are sensual, soft and evoke the strengths of Cleopatra’s passion into a pale pink base that radiates the foundation of LOVE.

This soft scent has endurance to fit the quality of leadership from General of the Roman Army to the last pharaoh of Egypt that conquered two worlds (Egypt and Rome) with her persuasive nature and enchantress beauty.

RADIANTLY ROMANTIC is truly fit for the royal woman in your life. It features regal notes of, bergamot, neroli, French tarragon oil, Egyptian jasmine absolute, rose absolute, orange blossom, Indonesian tuberose essence, pink musk, violet, vetiver, patchouli, chypre, green oakmoss extract, benzoin resin and French black truffle oil.

The swirl of floral is abundantly clear when first applied. It has a hypnotic and dreamy effect that describes Queen Cleopatra’s distinctiveness that surrounded Marc Anthony with a charm that lasted for a lifetime.

Daniel Vaudd truly impressed me with his creation of RADIANTLY ROMANTIC EAU DE PARFUM that I had to learn more about him. How he became such a successful perfumer and I find out that Mr. Vaudd was almost close to becoming a Neurologist!

THE INTERVIEW

Daniel where were you born?

I spent my formative years on several Caribbean islands – tropical rain forests, exotic flora, jewel-like seas and open skies, all influenced my creative mind; I was born on the Dutch colony island – Saint Eustatius.

What were your favourite subject(s) in school?

I found biology and chemistry the most fascinating of subjects when I was younger. Both proved invaluable to my becoming an aesthetician and perfumer; although I came awfully close to becoming a Neurologist (to follow in the foot-steps of my eldest brother).

When did you decide to make perfumery a career?

Scent has always been a predominant aspect of my life – it is the medium in which I house memories; most people have albums – I have shelves with hundreds of vials of scent. I made perfumery a career when I first found out that a career in perfumery was even possible.

Roja Dove
Daniel, I understand that you worked with Roja Dove! How did this happen?

I remember this clearly. I was visiting his perfumery to sample a particular scent by Christophe Laudamiel which I was intrigued by. Roja happened to be in the perfumery at the very same time. He came over and we begun conversing. During the course of the conversation, he introduced a bottle of Caron’s Tabac Blond – which moved me to tears. Perhaps then he understood my affinity with scent, as, soon after, he offered me the opportunity to become his personal researcher for the completion of his book – Essence of Perfume.

What is it about Roja that you most admire?

I have met no one more articulate or eloquent in the communication of perfume; his knowledge of perfumery is exceptional.

RADIANTLY ROMANTIC EAU DE PARFUM is based on inspiration of the great romance between Queen Cleopatra and Mark Anthony. Do you study Ancient Egyptian history, Daniel?

It was required to research the story of Mark and Cleopatra; particularly the latter. The Ptolemaic dynasty was a truly fascinating one. The idea of ‘romance’ as we know it today – was a luxury afforded by few, and even fewer royals. Yet within the social context, Cleopatra afforded both romance and power. Radiantly Romantic captures her strength, passion and acute femininity. By formatting the perfume in a Scented Amphorae pendant and Scented hand fan (available June 2011), I hope to stay true to an ancient civilization which understood the power, strength and seduction of perfume.

Daniel, Radiantly Romantic is truly a unique and beautiful fragrance! How closely is it made to the perfumes made in Ancient Egypt?

Firstly, Thank You.
It may be surprising to know that the ‘method of creating’ and ‘format’ of perfume has not changed much over millennia; early perfumes were almost exclusively oil, wax or resin based (apposed to alcohol). What has changed is the social contexts and connotations of ‘who’ wears perfume and ‘how’. With exception of few ingredients, this scent could, in my opinion, be easily deciphered by an Egyptian alchemist; who were also often priests/priestesses.

I am curious about one fragrant ingredient in Radiantly Romance and that is the French Black Truffle oil. Can you explain a little bit about it?

I believe a true perfume must always offer something unique – something that has never been experienced before. In an industry where new fragrances are copies of other ‘commercially’ successful fragrances, it was important to me to create something beautiful but exceptional.

Black Truffle Oil and Pink Musk do just that. Black Truffle Oil adds a new type of depth to the base without allowing the perfume to feel heavy, masculine or vulgar. Pink Musk is used in copious amount for its light ‘mist-like’ effect; creating a perfume that is seamless and has no perceivable end.

Radiantly Romance has a beautiful light pink tint. Daniel was this added to enhance the "mood of romance?

The colour is derived from one of the ingredients used within the perfume. I was cognizant that it would add to the mood of romance I intend the perfume to create.

Lastly, I cannot wait to see more creations from you, Daniel! Are you currently working on a new fragrance, now?

I am sure there will be new creations; but like paint to a canvas, it takes time to create a work of art.

REFLECTIONS PARFUM by JOANNE BASSETT

Posted by Unknown 08 May, 2011 0 comments

                                              REFLECTIONS

The Parfum of the Golden Sunsets

The time from when the sun begins to the onset of total darkness becomes the most beautiful warm glow of light golden rays.

In the twinkling of an eye, that effervescent glow of the sunset is gone and there is nothing anyone can do about it. You have only the memory to hold on to, but it is not tangible, but alas I know the perfect solution.

It comes in an exquisite hand blown glass perfume bottle and inside there is natural perfume with 36% fragrance strength in an organic base of golden jojoba.

The tint of this liquid gem of the ocean and the hand blown glass perfume bottle is to help replicate the colors of the sunset over the ocean, followed by majestic colors of pinks, reds, blues, purples and yellows merging into one reflection.

REFLECTIONS PARFUM by JoAnne Bassett is a floral oriental fragrance that surrounds you with a flirtatious floral scent, but it adds a twist of fresh citrus to liven the moment.

This LIMITED EDITION possesses some of the most exotic and most expensive ingredients such as centifolia rose otto, rare oud boronia, tuberose, Neroli (orange blossoms), vanilla, absolute vintage Mysore Sandalwood and other citrus and floral added.

Hold the bottle up to the sunlight and see the magnificent golden color of REFLECTIONS PARFUM. It twinkles with determination and the scent glides onto the skin and holding it firmly that stays on for several hours.

REFLECTIONS PARFUM is truly one of a kind. It is the fragrance that works with nature.

JoAnne Bassett
I corresponded with JoAnne on more about REFLECTIONS PARFUM and she shared her thoughts with me in an EXCLUSIVE interview.

  INTERVIEW

1. JoAnne, what inspired you to create REFLECTIONS PARFUM?

It all started with the exquisite, hand blown glass bottle. I was inspired with the bottle.
2. The hand-blown bottle is a work of art! Why did you choose this type of
bottle to showcase
REFLECTIONS PARFUM?

The Reflections parfum bottle started with a sunset over the Pacific Ocean.
Living in Southern California we get gorgeous sunsets over the ocean. The
pinks, reds, blues, purples, and yellows merge together to become a
reflection on the ocean. So with the idea of a reflection of the sunset on
the water I created the parfum reflection.
3. REFLECTIONS PARFUM is to replicate a "sunset over the ocean". JoAnne is REFLECTIONS PARFUM about a moment, time or place that took place near the
ocean?

The bottle replicates a sunset over the ocean. The Reflections parfum is not about an event that took place near the ocean. The bottle is an exotic,
colorful piece of fine art. The bottle deserved an expensive, exclusive fragrance. My muse for creating the parfum was the enchanting bottle so it
had to hold a very exotic and beautiful fragrance. I
then created a natural parfum with boronia and agarwood and some of the most expensive and sought
after perfume ingredients. I designed a parfum that would be a perfect match with this fantastic, hand blown perfume bottle with dauber.
Both elements were designed and created by master artisan. You can tell by the energy of the bottle and the parfum.
4. REFLECTIONS PARFUM is a Limited Edition, why is this?
A Limited Edition is necessary when creating parfums with ingredients like
rare agarwood, vintage Mysore sandalwood, and costly boronia. These are the
finest materials money can buy and at some point I will not have them
available to me. I also will run out of my supply of
vintage natural ingredients like my 10 year old jasmines, Bulgarian white rose otto, Mysore sandalwood, and others.

When you use all natural ingredients, essential
oils, absolutes, macerations, and tinctures of flowers
from your garden you
have to make them Limited Editions. When the material is no longer available then the edition is complete. I tincture roses, gardenias, citrus tree flowers, and other flowers from my garden to use in my Limited Editions and my Custom Bespoke Perfumes.
I am introducing another Limited Edition this year. It will launch this summer.

5. JoAnne, do you consider REFLECTIONS PARFUM as a spring scent for women?

It certainly can be a Spring and Summer scent.

Also, is this a day or evening scent?Because it has a 36% fragrance strength in an organic base of golden jojoba oil, I would wear it for evening.I believe that fragrance is a part of our wardrobe. They are to be worn daily and I do not say for women or men. When a person is drawn to wearing Reflections they should do so without question.

Thank you very much, JoAnne for your time and Congratulations on the launch of REFLECTIONS PARFUM!

 Thank you so much, Felicia
