                         FLYING COLORS NATURAL PERFUMES
                  with Anita Kalnay

  Introduction:

The International Perfume Foundation (IPF) recently launched a Directory for Certified Natural Perfumers worldwide. The Directory is the first step in responding to a growing number of questions consumers have been asking about the contents of perfumes and the importance of natural products in their lives.

 Interview:

Anita Kalnay is a 100% natural perfumer and owner of FLYING COLORS NATURAL PERFUMES in Canada. Anita is  dedicated to the "Art of Perfumery" by the collection of unique and diversed scents that are created in her perfumery.

FLYING COLORS NATURAL PERFUMES can provide you the opportunity to design your own signature scent or celebrate a special occasion by hosting a perfume party!

Anita is honored with the title of Certified Natural Perfumer with the International Perfume Foundation. She is among a select group of natural perfumers worldwide that uphold natural perfumery in the highest regard.

Anita Kalnay is someone you should know.

Where are you based?

Vancouver Island, BC, Canada

How did you start? What was the first scent that made you decide to become a perfumer ? When was that?

My Perfume Journey started as a ‘gift' to myself for my 50th birthday – after a Spiritual Teacher ‘challenged' me to ‘become more than 1% of my potential’. My first scent was actually a ‘gift’ to my clients called PROSPERITY which was designed in 2002 and re-launched to celebrate 2012. “But where will the money come from? Why from wherever it is at the time” was the quote from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi that inspired the scent – a fantasy chypre. It was sent out as a fragrant card that said “write a wish for yourself on this card and hide it away someplace special”. Everyone did it and within a very short time I was receiving all sorts of feedback on how quickly their wishes had come true. That was the beginning.

You are a natural perfumer, so when did you made the choice to become a natural perfumer instead of following the majority of the brands making synthetic perfumes. What led you to make this choice?

I don’t really like conventional perfumes and I can’t wear them. And I don’t feel inspired by Brands themselves, but more a desire to explore the unexplored – led by my nose into magical arenas of the unknown. I love being a Designer first and I am attracted to bold and unusual notes and how they can be combined – and the VIRTUES that those combinations create. Pure esoteric beauty that uplifts and heals the psyche. When we are in ‘balance’ with ourselves, all of nature can be in ‘harmony’.

Where can we find your perfumes ? Are you distributed worldwide?

I am a small niche designer. Perfumes can be purchased directly from the website. Personal contact and matching 'the right scent to the right person' is important to the Flying Colors concept. www.genieinabottle.ca

Can you give us an idea what type of person buys your product ? From which country are most of them from ? Do you have many European clients?

Most people find out about the Flying Colors Natural Perfumes by word of mouth, either having met me as a client or friend – as I also offer Ayurvedic Aromatherapy Massage in my scope of practice. The Natural Perfumes are a more refined use of essential oils in a co-creative design process. They are just now starting to surface in popularity. I would say that people are generally curious to try ' natural' perfume alternatives and clients are seeking tools that will help them to connect to their ‘soul essence’ qualities more specifically. Unless you have met me, you’ve probably never heard of me. We do ship worldwide and recommend ordering samples first.

Do you think the use of social media can spread the message of natural perfume as a healthier alternative?

Like Nature – the seeds of our Natural Perfume industry are just now starting to sprout! I’m not even sure that they are actually visibly coming through the soil just yet. But they will soon! A movement like this is the beginning of a lot of FUN and some lovely healthy, eco-conscious alternatives for those who want to re-connect to the elemental basics of Nature. Fragrant ethers – are the most ‘evolved’ state of plants themselves.

YES! Social media is so honest! I love the personal stories that people share and how fast something can travel as news. Like artists – Perfumers also have unique styles that are conveyed in the energy of their creations – especially with naturals. I like Pinterest as well as it offers a more visual ‘collection’ and sharing. Niche Perfumers can be so focused and hard to find that if it weren't for social media we might not be visible at all.

The Fragrance Designer's Primer: A Roundtable of 14 Fragrance Makers answer 34 Creative, Brand and Business Defining Questions (The Entrepreneur Primer) (Volume 1)

"Are you interested in perfumes and fragrance design as a small business? There are many how-to books on starting an enterprise, but often the best advice comes directly from those with actual experience. Thus came the idea for this book; this primer. Why not ask perfumers firsthand what they have experienced and what they recommend? With this concept in mind, we composed 34 key questions and asked them to 14 interesting artisans with experience in either perfume, skin care, or both. Their answers on creativity, branding and business are very frank and often personal, and written in a journal or diary style. The information in the resulting primer is worth its weight in gold."

The author and brainchild behind the book is Mr. A.K. Crump (Andre) who is the CEO of TasteTV.

The Fragrance Designer's Primer: A Roundtable of 14 Fragrance Makers answer 34 Creative, Brand and Business Defining Questions (The Entrepreneur Primer) (Volume 1) was published in 2015 and is comprised of niche perfumers and a publisher/writer.

It gives intimate details and desires about these incredible niche and natural brands and the perfumers!

The Best of Both Worlds

                                                      PARFUMS DUSITA
The Fragrance with the GOLDEN Heart

It took me the longest to express my feelings about a fragrance collection that I truly love. For the first time, I was lost for words. I know its beautiful, creative and even sensual but what about worldly. How do I describe worldly when describing a fragrance collection built on the poetry and words of a master writer who leaves behind a quest for us to continue unifying and bridging gaps in a world that can be so divided.

I must say the first time I saw a photo of Parfums Dusita founder and perfumer, Pissara 'Ploi' Umavijan, I thought how beautiful she is but also how inviting she comes across in her photos. I continue to read about Pissara and her career as an actress and the best part she is a perfumer!
Pissara Umavijan

Without hesitation I contacted Pissara and within a week or so, I received a beautiful collection of samples that spoke to my soul as I could smell the scents through the outer packaging.

I loves fragrances that tell a story and I was immediately inspired by the culture and heritage of two worlds (Thailand and France) into a stream of scents.

The packaging was so well tailored and it neatly sat in a box like a gift from Tiffany &  Co.

I got a chance to explore the world of Parfums Dusita and from that moment   I still have not returned back to Earth.

Those breathtaking components in Oudh Infini are compelled to an all time level of a rare essence that surrounds the Rose de Mai with sensual and deep notes of Indian Sandalwood with a fruity engagement of Orange Blossom and a sweet Oriental flavor of the world's most popular scent of an exclusive Vanilla Absolute.

The Golden Heart as I refer to Parfums Dusita is the warm and inviting notes for the Heart fragrance category for each fragrance.

I love the heart note description for Melodie De L' Amour Parfum. Its a "creamy poetic Peach". Not just any peach but a peach with movement and passion. I love that!

Melodie De L' Amour is the floral in the collection. I love how it lingers on my skin for hours and it gives a drydown like a sweet piece of flesh that is bound by a floral garden.

It's the harmony it plays with the heady scent of Gardenia that leaves me speechless. Not too overwhelming or overpowering.

Melodie De L' Amour is the answer to ultimate seduction!

If you are seeking independence from something or someone, than Issara Parfum is your match made in Heaven.

The fragrance is dedicated to the Fougere (fern). My first encounter with a fragrance that consisted of fern was in a men's scent but spare the thought. Issara is not a dark or woody scent known to men fragrances.

That notion is in the past. Issara gives a lively and a fresh feeling to Fougere and it can be shared by male and female.

My first impose was to smell the scent  right away after I sprayed it on.   But after I let  it linger awhile, I felt the scent of a lush green garden. A bit of a moist undertone...after a morning rain.

The heart note states it has a "rousing Coumarin accord" which is common in a Fourgere fragrance. That is why I got that lush green garden sensation. Nice and mild.

I traveled the world with Parfums Dusita. I lived the best of both worlds. This is a unique combination. Most scents with a dual heritage will give one or the other. Not, Parfums Dusita. You got a cultural experience in every spray.

Pissara's late father, Dr. Montri Umavijani (1941-2006) was considred Thailand's leading modern poet. He set the tone years ago before Parfums Dusita was born. In fact in my estimation he created the first ingredient in the making of a great perfume. In this case a great perfume called,  Parfums Dusita.

I experienced a wealth of knowledge in every drop with warmth, love, sensuality, compassion and freedom with a poetic destiny that will never end.

To have a GOLDEN Heart, you have to start with a generous woman to have created such a collection that generates a stir of excitement and thank goodness Pissara listened to her father.

                        www.parfumsdusita.com

CONGRATULATIONS! to Pissara on the recent launch of two new parfums. Le Sillage Blanc and La Douceur de Siam. Look forward to a review on these fragrances!

NOTE: If you would like to learn more about Pissara's father, Dr. Montri Umavijani, I found a wonderful blog. Go to  'A Tribute to Monti Umavijani' at mvijani.blogspot.com

                                   Raven
                                             Ellis Brooklyn

What a beautiful new fragrance that celebrates the icon symbol for Halloween and poetry, the Raven.

This scent for women gives a stunning dedication to the Raven as a witty, mystifying scent that is characterized by the house of Ellis Brooklyn as humorous!

It comes from literature of Edgar Allan Poe's "The Raven" to the depictions atop Native totem poles.

Raven Eau de Parfum is made in small batches in New York and are paraben-free and phthalates-free.

Composed by Jerome Epinette in 2016.

                    The Revenge of Lady Blanche

                                      Penhaligon

  • "A darling of London Society, and one of the most influential ladies in Britain. Her aloof beauty, mysterious past and blazing passions are scrutinized by all from shop-girls to Royalty. She would do anything to climb the social ladder still further. Her latest scheme is to poison her husband, Lord George, inheriting his wealth and burying his secrets for ever! Her fragrance reflects her very essence: a green floral narcotic."
  •  I love this description! It's like a Sherlock Holmes novel. What a great way to turn up the spook on All Hallow's Eve!
  •  The bottle and the box of The Revenge of Lady Blanche Eau de Parfum is so ornate. The bottle has a top on it which resembles a cat and the color of the fragrance is a tan/green shade. It reminds me of what poison would look like during that century.
This is a floral scent with the simplest of ingredients but it holds a lot of power for the story of scent. This is an incredible creation of wealth, greed and treachery!

 Fragrance Notes:
  Top Notes: Powdery Orris
  Heart Notes: Narcissus Flower
  Base Notes: Hyacinth

International Perfume Foundation
                   Campaign

                        Advertisement for Perfumes

This is a very special segment for The International Perfume Foundation Campaign that began on October 15, 2016 and last until November 15, 2016.
Each day there will be a new campaign topic on perfumes...natural perfumes to be exact. Today, the campaign topic has to do with advertisement and perfume.

Just because you see glossy pages advertising a fragrance in a national beauty magazine, does that mean that those ingredients are actually in the fragrance?

I would surely hope so. Are you really getting a natural rose scent or a camellia in a high priced fragrance at a upscale department store. I would surely hope so.

If the marketing and advertising cost more than the creation of the fragrance, do you really think you are getting a scent that states the essence of violet, jasmine and vanilla?

According to The Vanilla Company (article dated July 26, 2016)

Vanilla is the second most expensive spice with Saffron ranking as number ONE as the most expensive spice.

So, what do you do? Do you go for the glossy advertisement in a national beauty magazine or do you purchase a natural fragrance from an artisan perfumery that promotes a beautiful scent that is also good for your body and the Earth.

There are many natural perfumeries that offer the best and they are sharing it with all of us. No, there will be no glossy advertisement  for a small natural perfumery in a national beauty magazine due to cost. However, I would rather have a perfume that I know what ingredients are in it, then paying for synthetics.

If you agree, then I suggest you join a MOVEMENT that supports natural perfumes and the natural perfumers who create them.

It's The International Perfume Foundation. I am associated with this great organization and I hope you will join us in Campaign 2016!

Let your voice me heard along with many others in the fragrance industry.

It's very simple to join and let's support companies who want to share the beauty of the ART OF PERFUMERY the correct way.
