Fragrance Review

Exploring the World of BALMAIN for Hair

For the last several  months I have been researching the world of hair products. Since, I lost my hair to chemotherapy treatments in 2013 my hair has started to grow back and I wanted ways to find nourishing and enriching hair products to maintain my new hair growth.

I also was looking for hair products that not only was good for my hair but smelled great too!

While researching I came upon a hair product by the world famous fashion house, BALMAIN. I didn't know that BALMAIN offered a hair product, so I found an email address and I asked if I could get a sample to try and I would write about my experience with it.

BALMAIN hair products division sent back a gracious email a few days later indicating their interest and would send a bottle at no charge.

A few weeks later I received my package and after washing my hair the next morning I used BALMAIN Silk Perfume. I sprayed my hair three times which I found out that two times was more than enough due to the light and airy scent that blossomed into a fragrance spray.

My hair wasn't dry but slightly oily which is best for my hair. There was no after effects of sticky and hardness to the hair. My hair was very soft with a brilliance of sheen. No chemical after effects just pure argan and silk proteins that worked wonderfully in this product.

My bathroom smelled so beautiful and it filled the room with a scent of soft but a luxury scent that is good enough for a baby's skin.

I used it each day and found my hair to be very soft and never dry. BALMAIN Silk Perfume is truly designed with the health of the hair in mind and not solely on its brand image.

I usually do not write about major brand companies but I am more than thrilled to write this article!
I feel like I am the poster-child for BALMAIN Silk Perfume because it has done wonders for my hair after chemotherapy treatment a year ago.

BALMAIN hair division has a wealth of other hair products such as shampoos, conditioners, elixir,  hair spray, mousse,  brushes and even hair extensions!

Its my mission to explore the world of BALMAIN hair and continue to being happy with my hair.

BALMAIN is a haute couture fashion house founded by Pierre Balmain. Balmain was born in 1914 France.

Fragrance News & Review

                           THE HOLIDAY SEASON
                            Glamorous Books of Scent

Jan Moran

'Tis the Season' According to analysts the fragrance industry is doing quite well in the form of sales this holiday season. By sales, I mean the niche market. According to a Reuters report in the December 14, 2014 edition of The Economic Times more and and more consumers are spending their money on quality fragrances composed by perfumers who bring the luxury world of perfumery a sense of value, pride and amazing talent.

The niche market of perfumery is creative and each and every perfume that I have experienced brings its own story to the scent of creation.

The fragrance industry to me is not just about the actual scent, bottle and packaging but the knowledge and innovation.  Which brings me to the topic of books. Not just any books but- fragrance books.

I have learned and have admired so many of the bloggers and perfumers who have put their passion  and experienceof fragrance onto paper in the form of  a practical hands-on book, a memoir or a  fictional novel.

This season, I have received emails from best-selling author and entrepreneur, Jan Moran who incredibly has written several books on fragrance and beauty that should not go unnoticed this holiday season.

My first encounter with Jan Moran was in the year 2000 with her first book Fabulous Fragrances II: A Guide to Prestige Perfumes for Women and Men published by Rizzoli USA.

I loved the thick hardcover book that features a blazing red cover with a gorgeous lady on the front of it wearing a beautiful red dress.

I wanted to know more about Jan Moran and how her passion for fragrances became a book for us to seek as a guide to the world's finest perfumes.

Since that time, Jan Moran has written several best-selling books that reached the charts of the New York Times.

Scent of Triumph (A novel of Perfume and Passion) will be released in March 2015 from St. Martin's Press. Scent of Triumph is a historical fiction novel based on the life of a French perfumer during the 1940's.

It gets better with the release of FLAWLESS (A Hostile Beauty Series Novel) Book 1 and the second book in the series with BEAUTY MARK (A Hostile Beauty Series Novel).

Jan uses her rare talent to bring exciting stories to the lives of perfumer lovers and beauty product junkies a glimpse into the world of glamour that seems and suspense that would rivel any popular television show seen on prime time.

What a tremendous gift for the Holiday season and throughout the year to give a collection of books written by award-winning author Jan Moran.

I am now a published author and now I am writing about perfume thanks to my admiration of Jan Moran and how we can continue the love of fragrance by reading a book in our spare time, while exercising on the treadmill, while having a vanilla latte at Starbucks and my favorite after the children have gone to bed for the evening.

All of the books can be purchased through www.amazon.com and Scent of Triumph (A novel of Perfume and Passion) can be pre-ordered.

Books are a treasure and why not sure the gift of mystery, passion, intrigue and fragrance with a passionate person of the fragrance industry.

FRAGRANCE LAUNCHES & REVIEW

                                                           QUADROON
The Women of Color & Heritage

Bourbon French Parfums the oldest family owned perfumery in New Orleans, Louisiana will launch, QUADROON this Fall to honor the beautiful, mysterious young women of mixed race and heritage in New Orleans.

This is the second year that I know of that Bourbon French Parfums hosted a Fragrance Naming Contest. This year the winner is Irene who submitted the name, Quadroon.

Mixed race women in New Orleans were a rarity but during the 1800s it was known who these young women were "free women of color" usually placed in high society marriage.

QUADROON by Bourbon French Parfums is created with a deep warm spice with woodsy base notes including sandalwood, amber and vetiver.

This sounds like a charmer that I am sure will become a household name in the niche fragrance industry.

I contacted Bourbon French Parfums when I got their email about the arrival of QUADROON.

A sample will be sent to me along with photo(s )of the bottle. So after receiving this, I will evaluate and write a review on it.

                            ELIZABETH MUSMANNO
A Leader in the Fragrance Industry

Have you every experienced a connection with someone whom you have not formerly met?

Well, this happened to me last week while watching the QVC Channel. I notice about four hours before the airing that The Fragrance Foundation would be on.

I was excited about it because this would give me some insight on what is going on with The Fragrance Foundation. Perhaps opportunities to explore the company, what fragrances would be chosen or perhaps maybe a new launch by The Fragrance Foundation!

All of these things were going on in my head but I couldn't fathom what would be presented by The Fragrance Foundation.

It was five minutes before the airing of The Fragrance Foundation feature that I snuggled on my sofa and then there was this beautiful, tall and regal woman sitting next to the host.

Wow, there is a new President for The Fragrance Foundation. Where have I been? I thought to myself.

The host introduced, Elizabeth Musmanno, President of The Fragrance Foundation. The host had to admit that she thought she would be a little intimidated because Elizabeth Musmanno knows so many people but the host confessed that Elizabeth is so warm and down to earth.

I got that feeling too when I first saw Elizabeth. I felt like she is so down to earth and very innovative enough to come up with the idea to bring The Fragrance Foundation to QVC.

So what else could The Fragrance Foundation introduce or make better under the leadership of Elizabeth Musmanno?

I personally like to continue see the niche category of The Fragrance Foundation continue to grow.

The membership price for the several categories available is a little steep but its the membership that keeps the doors open at The Fragrance Foundation. Perhaps maybe the more involvement by individuals who are passionate about perfumery could lessen the price? Such as offering one service (s) on a regular basis or part-time can earn a lesser fee membership category.

Did you notice that I did not mention any of the fragrances that were featured on QVC! I did that on purpose. In this article, I want to focus on the leaders behind the company/brand.

I truly feel good about Elizabeth's approach to people. During the segment Elizabeth and the host mentioned several times that they each have a daughter who is the same age.

How nice. The idea of adding a little of your personal life. Elizabeth understands the viewers are apart of the family be QVC or the viewers, everyone can identify with family.

Now, I will keep my attention on The Fragrance Foundation. Its the leadership that counts and this time Elizabeth out shined the fragrances.

Thank you, Elizabeth.

Note: Elizabeth Musmanno was a guest on QVC on Friday, October 3, 2014 at 7-8pm.

The featured fragrances in The Fragrance Foundation Hall of Fame were Shalimar by Guerlain, Joy by Jean Patou, Eternity by Calvin Klein, Oscar de la Renta by Oscar de la Renta and Happy by Clinique

                               DREAMS OF SMOKE
The Regal Scent of The Season

I must admit that Fall is my most favorite time of the year. I love the crisp cool air with the bronzing of leaves and the rain mist on an occasional warm day. Now is my time to get into wearing deeper and stronger scents that will match the Fall and winter approaching season.

I was delighted to get a sample of DREAMS OF SMOKE Eau de Parfum Spray by Amanda Feeley of Esscentual Alchemy.

It was the description of DREAMS OF SMOKE that peaked my curiosity. The idea of a smoky tea floral woody scent that I liked. Sipping tea on a chilly night while getting a hint of a summer floral to the tune of a woody ambiance. Now that I like.

DREAMS OF SMOKE is a deep hazy scent that lingers with a vibration of romance at the peak of perfection.

Its spicy and serene smell was the perfect scent to wear to the Chicago Marathon on this past Sunday. No, I did not participate but only a spectator who wanted to honor this most impressive cause with a highly competitive scent to match the moment and I found that in DREAMS OF SMOKE.

It actually turned out to be a most beautiful day and the weather became warmer later in the day. DREAMS OF SMOKE Eau de Parfum Spray reacted to my every moment.

Earlier in the morning the weather was cool and I got a waft of the sandalwood sipping through and as the weather warmed up, I got a mellow hint of vanilla with a glimmer of rose de mai that took me into the evening of a soft breeze on North Lakeshore Drive.

If any of you are familiar with Chicago, you know the skyline is one of the most beautiful in the world. I am not just saying this, its factual.

Amanda Feeley composed a scent for all the senses and seasons for that matter. DREAM OF SMOKE spoke to me in the manner that floral is so transparent but yet it meets the needs of the woody notes with a complementary assemble.

Dreams of Smoke features notes of lapsang souchong tea, spice accord, rose de mai, orange blossom, vanilla accord, sandalwood accord, beeswax and honey.

RETAIL
Dreams of Smoke 1 ounce Eau de Parfum Natural Spray $295.00
Dreams of Smoke 5 ml Eau de Parfum Natural Spray $80.00
Dreams of Smoke sample $10.34

FRAGRANCE REVIEWS & NEW LAUNCHES

                                     A ROSE IS A ROSE

Well not really. Take note but to what I am saying not the fragrance notes in ROSE flash Perfume Roll-On, the new fragrance by award-winning perfumer, Andy Tauer.

Tauer created ROSE flash in his own image but creating a complete rose scent, not bits and pieces from other scents to create this. So, I am simply saying and Mr. Tauer is saying there are NO notes to reveal.

Tauer stated on his website and I am paraphrasing that this is the first fragrance from the flash collection. It is meant to be fun and shared.

It seems that Mr.Tauer wants to keep ROSE flash rather simple but there is nothing simple about a rose. It is the Queen of all flowers and I am quite sure Mr. Tauer took this matter into consideration. In fact, Mr. Tauer states that ROSE flash is the most luxurious fragrances that he has created.

This is not to say that he hasn't composed other rose scented fragrances in the Classic and Homages collection that were not done without tremendous skill and artistic persuasion but I feel we are going to be hearing a lot about ROSE flash during the FIFI AWARDS.

If you are truly into rose scented fragrances, try these other creations by Tauer Perfumes such as No.06 Incense Rose, No.08 Une Rose Chypree and No.10 Une Rose Vermeille.

ROSE flash is really reasonably priced for such as luxurious perfume but there is limitations on the amount of them sold only in Switzerland and the US for logistic reasons only.

ROSE flash comes in a 10 ml roll-on bottle with simple packaging.

It is ONLY available at www.tauerperfumes.com

What I love about a rose is it is never out of style and the perfect fit for ALL seasons. So, I will indulge in this luxury item because Andy Tauer is one of the most respected perfumers of our time.

FRAGRANCE REVIEW
 International Segment

                   THE LUXURY OF OUD
                                   Floris of London
                                  Honey & Leather

FLORIS LONDON, one of the world's finest niche perfumeries launched two luxurious fragrances for the FLORIS LONDON PRIVATE COLLECTION.

Honey Oud and Leather Oud Eau de Parfum were created EXCLUSIVELY for Harrods of London which debuted on July 30, 2014.

I know you may be wondering why an Oud fragrances for the summer but Honey Oud and Leather Oud provide a soft and appealing scent to the rich and woody scent of Oud.

Oudh or better known as "Agarwood" has become the new trend in fragrances but Oudh is an ancient fragrances and has been around for thousands of years.

Its like pomegranate is so popularly used in skincare and hair care products and yet, this delicious fruit has too been around for thousands of years.

Apparently, FLORIS LONDON find these two fragrances to be very sacred and felt that Harrods of London would do their bidding good.

I find this truly an honor for Harrods of London and I am very sure that Honey Oud and Leather Oud will be received well by fans of FLORIS LONDON from around the world.

In my estimation, it will take some leg work to get your hands on a bottle of Honey Oud or Leather Oud. This will require some networking from family, friends and social network "friends" in the UK to get a bottle or two for you.

I know a few trusted partners that I could contact to do me the honors or perhaps get me a few samples, at least.

What I do look forward to with these two fragrances is the precious aromas of Oud with the unique scents of sweet honey and leather.

Actually, for Honey Oud, FLORIS LONDON refers to it as 'English Honey'. This oriental-woody fragrances is a gourmand accord with hints of vanilla, Oud Oil and sparkles with the scent of rose.

 Fragrance Notes:

 Top Notes: bergamot, English honey
 Heart Notes: Oud, patchouli, rose
Base Notes: amber, labdanum, Oud, musk, vanilla

I personally like the smell of leather. It that rich, soft and shiny material that reminds me of luxuries items such as a leather jacket, car seats and shiny shoes. Now having that combined with Oud should be a momentous occasion for me.

Leather Oud from the fragrance notes provided by FLORIS LONDON, is a deep rooted woody scent with a bright hint of amber. The Oud (Agarwood) used in both scents are certified-sustainable source of oil. Its is a very expensive oil and one of its kind.

  Fragrance Notes:

  Top Notes: bergamot, leather
Heart Notes: carnation, geranium, Oud, patchouli
Base Notes: Oud, vetiver, woody, amber

I find the exclusivity of Honey Oud and Leather Oud sold exclusively at Harrods of London to be quite exciting. What is the story behind this partnership and why? Well, I would like to find out and bring that fragrance story to you.    - Felicia M. Hazzard

P.S. Did I fail to mention the elegant labels on the bottles!

What is Agarwood?
"Agarwood, also known as oud, oodh or agar, is a dark resinous heartwood that forms in Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees when they become infected with a type of mould.

Western perfumers may also use Agarwood essential oil under the name "oud" or "oudh".

Note: Photos of HONEY OUD and LEATHER OUD are courtesy of Google Images. Photo of organic Agarwood courtesy of www.ensaroud.com. Information on the description of What is Agarwood comes from www.wikipedia.en.

  Word To The Wise
If you are seeking pure and organic Agarwood "Oud". I would suggest going to www.ensaroud.com
It is the BEST and yes it is costly because it is genuine. Samples are available as long as there is still oil. These are LIMITED due to nature. Also, this website offers valuable educational information on Oud.

FLOWERHEAD EAU DE PARFUM BY BYREDO

Why I Decided To Play The Part

                                                                ACT I

When I was in grade school, I never got a leading role in school plays. I nevered complained because I was considered a good student. When in high school, I decided not to sign up for the drama class because I couldn't see myself pretending to kiss a boy simply to convey "realism" to the student body.

Its wasn't until I started writing full-time that I could now express myself through writing and that pictures coincided with magazines could I now have the leading role in performing through the Art of Perfumery.

One of my favorite perfumeries is Byredo based in Sweden and owned by Mr. Ben Gorham, a genius and one of the most creative perfumers in the equator. He composed FLOWERHEAD Eau de Parfum in collaborations with perfumers Olivia Giacobetti and Jerome Epinette.

It is this fragrance that now has prompted me to get back into the "dress rehearsal" of acting out the part and not just writing about it.

It took Mr. Gorham six years to complete FLOWERHEAD according to the May 2014 issue of the VOGUE Magazine archive edition. The inspiration was taken from Gorham's cousin's wedding in Jaipur, India.

All great scenes in a movie and stage play start with a vision. I immediately thought about all the colorful and vibrate flowers that could compose such an inspiration to come up with a scent and name for such a dedication.
Further into rehearsing my role, I learned from www.byredo.com "in the traditional Indian wedding flower heads are strung together in giant leis, including Jaimala garlands which are exchanged between bride and groom as a token of mutual respect".

Later, I learned that the couple is showered with petals for spiritual protection and a wedding canopy is covered with exotic blooms that would give any ceremony of this magnitude a relenting oasis of unbelievable vibrant hues and a heavily scented atmosphere.

After reading this, I immediately wanted to see what a flower head would look like. I thought of scents of creamy jasmine and multitudes of tuberoses clashing ever so lightly to the tune of cheers and standing ovations.
On www.byredo.com gives a breathtaking photo of a flower head that brings life to FLOWERHEAD Eau de Parfum. It is now that I needed to try on my costume. So, I started searching for Indian flowers, headwreaths that would resemble a traditional flower head along with a beautiful fuschia colored gown to compliment the vast arena of onlookers in wedding attire.

To put on a great performance, one must not rush the particulars that go into making a great performance...a masterpiece.

My philosophy when writing about a perfume is the story that goes behind the scent. What led the perfumer to compose this scent? What is the vision?

The leading characters in this role is the jasmine sambac, tuberose, rose petals that will provide the heart/middle notes in this perfomance. Next, with the headliners you get angelica seeds, sicilian lemon and lingonberry and finally the encore presentation gets rave reviews with amber and suede.

My quest to bring FLOWERHEAD Eau de Parfum to life for me has given me a new opportunity to transform my words with photos of me describing the scent.

Now, it is by choice that I chose, FLOWERHEAD Eau de Parfum to start with my audition.

FRAGRANCE REVIEW

                                                 BLOOMING DREAM
The Garden Inspired Perfumery with an Artistic Flair

I was deeply amazed when I discovered an incredible website by natural perfumer, Suzinn Weiss. To my other amazement, this was the launch of a new perfumery and I was the first contact.  To me with all the vast fragrances offered, I assumed that BLOOMING DREAM perfumery had been established for awhile but when Suzinn replied to my email, I found out that this was the initial launch of BLOOMING DREAM!

My third amazement with BLOOMING DREAM perfumery is that these garden inspired scents are from a TRUE gardener and a trained fine artist!

I thought almost 3 years ago, I was really doing something great when I moved into a house that had a lilac garden but for Suzinn her garden has to be an oasis of blissful scents and scenic colorful delights that are to beautiful to behold with the naked eye.

Thanks to Suzinn who sent me at my request, five garden filled scents that are just at its  peak for this time of the season.

I was overwhelmed by the authentic replications of these natural fragrances taken from an organic garden in Portland, Oregon so I wanted to learn more about them.

Suzinn sent me LOVE BIRD, OTTOO, HERB GARDEN, CHAMPA BOOTY and JASZ.

I allowed myself time to indulge in each of these awe-inspiring scents while taking my walks down the street to vesture in its sensational power of an organic garden in the summer.

Each scent is very different and I got a wonderful group of samples that ranged from spicy, soft, romantic, oriental and a little citrusy!

This was the change I needed to continue to explore authentic natural and niche fragrances that makes this industry so fascinating.

LOVE BIRD EAU DE PARFUM SPRAY- I was taken by the fact this fragrances consists of my two favorite scents and that is amber and patchouli. I love how the blend is perfectly meshed into one wholesome sillage. One scent does not out due the other but yet you get the woody notes with a delicate blend and smoothness of silk. The patchouli is like no other. It stands alone with great majesty.

CHAMPA BOOTY EAU DE PARFUM SPRAY- This is the fragrance that I loved! Its the citrus blend with sandalwood that is so compelling. When I read more about CHAMPA BOOTY it consists of the sweet magnolia blossom, a southern favorite that makes it so charming. This is the PERFECT summer scent!

OTTO EAU DE PARFUM SPRAY- Truly amazing! There is chocolate in this fragrance that mingles with basil, pepper and cardamom. Its like a "meal for the nose". I immediately thought of a lobster dinner with chocolate cake for desert. OTTO is contagious and I see this fragrance being a HUGE seller at the cash register!

JASZ EAU DE PARFUM SPRAY- Guess what? How about Jasmine and Lemon. That is what you get in JASZ.  A sweet delight that comes off like a sublime custard. Its blended with cedarwood, ginger, clove. Its sensual and it whispers the almighty white heady flower in a supreme manner that commands subtle attention.

HERB GARDEN EAU DE PARFUM SPRAY- This fragrance brings the beauty back to the herbal garden with layers upon layers of rare and expensive scents. The most expensive spice in this scent is Saffron. BOOK ANNOUNCEMENT

                                                  SCENT OF TRIUMPH
                                                The book of courageous ambition

When French perfumer Danielle Bretancourt steps aboard a luxury ocean liner, leaving her son behind in Poland with his grandmother, she has no idea that her life is about to change forever. The year is 1939, and the declaration of war on the European continent soon threatens her beloved family, scattered across many countries. Traveling through London and Paris into occupied Poland, Danielle searches desperately for her the remains of her family, relying on the strength and support of Jonathan Newell-Grey, a young captain. Finally, she is forced to gather the fragments of her impoverished family and flee to America. There she vows to begin life anew, in 1940s Los Angeles.

There, through determination and talent, she rises high from meager jobs in her quest for success as a perfumer and fashion designer to Hollywood elite. Set between privileged lifestyles and gritty realities, Scent of Triumph is one woman’s story of courage, spirit, and resilience
.

(Excerpt above written by St. Martin's Griffin Press via www.amazon.com)

Jan Moran, bestselling author, beauty and lifestyle expert, entrepreneur and innovator will debut with much anticipation, a book  based on historical fiction. SCENT OF TRIUMPH, is about a French perfumer during the 1940's.

Prior to becoming a perfumer, this woman leaves her family behind to pursue a new life in a different world, but at what cost?

I am very sure Jan will give us that information with great suspense and a theme that we can all learn from when pursuing our own dreams and aspirations.

SCENT OF TRIUMPH is on my list! I personally cannot get enough of historical fiction books, especially when it is about perfumery.

This book is now available for pre-order at www.amazon.com either in hardcover or paperback.

I look forward to speaking with Jan in depth about SCENT OF TRIUMPH and bringing that interview to you in the coming weeks!

Note: SCENT OF TRIUMPH has been acquired by St. Martin's Press and will be re-released with a NEW cover and title.

The word "belles lettres" is a French phrase meaning "beautiful or "fine writing. Since this is a term to describe a category of writing, this will pertain to my passion about fragrances. I will review niche, natural, artisan and designer perfumes from all over the world. I write with passion but will use my journalistic skills that I obtained in college. Not only will I feature fragrances but I will feature new books on fragrances/perfumes, fragrance events and interview authors and perfumers.

I hope you take this journey with me and begin your own passion for the ART OF PERFUMERY!
