           CHOCOLATES from around the WORLD

A four-part series on natural perfumers

                            PART FOUR

This is the conclusion of an exciting and rewarding series on chocolate perfumes from some of the most talented Master perfumers across the globe.

I am proud to introduce my next chocolate oasis of perfumery from the continent of Africa. Chocolate comes in virtually everything we use and its history is one of the most colorful and interesting flavor of its kind.

Fragrance Belles-Lettres: The Magazine features perfumes from all over the world. However when I heard about the Rose en Bos Botanical Perfumes, I had to investigate it. After reading about this new and one of a kind perfumery named, The Western Cape Perfumery nestled in the rolling mountains of South Africa, I knew I had captured the world.

The Western Cape Perfumery was just established in 2010 with perfumes creations inspired by the beauty of the continent.

This niche perfumery creates elegant and unusual scents that are hand-blended in small batches like it was done during the 18Th and 19Th century in France.

The perfumer and owner of The Western Cape Perfumery is Emily Pienaar who has a unique aspect to perfumes that are controlled by nature. This is why all the fragrances in this collection are made entirely from plants which include extracts from flowers, bark, seeds, resins, grasses and fruit.

These “botanical” perfumes do not have synthetic fixatives and smell completely different from one person to the next. So, my experience with this collection is based solely on me and I am thankful for it because I know that these perfumes are made with superb ingredients that are good for my skin and good for the environment.

Rose en Bos Botanical Perfumes consist of four fragrances that are all different what its own character of sophistication.

IMITHI Parfum is described as layers of forest and precious wood made with vanilla, patchouli and cedar.

ROSE &VINE Parfum is a rich floral scent made with pink rose, rose geranium and night-flowering tuberose.

VIRIDESCENT Parfum is a fresh and vibrant scent of citrus and green notes.

DARK HEART Parfum is the essence of deep robust chocolate that is spicy with intoxicating notes of dark chocolate and jasmine.

I had the opportunity to test these scents in a solid perfume base made with unfiltered beeswax and African baobab oil. It is truly safe because my two children ages 2 ½ and 5 who were curious wanted to sniff the perfumes and rubbed it on their wrists. Once they did that, there was no after effects or allergic reactions.

I love the range of scents and how the beeswax melts on your finger before it is applied to the skin. It goes on warm from the heat of the fingertips and the fragrance smells so pure and strong but it calms down to a lasting lighter scent that stays on for at least eight hours.

Rose en Bos Botanical Perfumes come in an array of products from solid parfum extrait, floral perfume lockets,  eau de toilette and eau de toilette samples.

The Western Cape Perfumery is exclusive to Fragrance Belles-Lettres: The Magazine in terms of the first in-depth reviews and EXCLUSIVE interview with Emily Pienaar.

The interview with Ms. Pienaar is in two parts because the first part is questions about IMITHI, ROSE &VINES and VIRIDESCENT Parfums.

The second part is questions about DARK HEART, the chocolate perfume.

Rose en Bos Botanical Perfumes is uniquely beautiful due to the use of natural resources that Africa has to offer since its creation on earth.

THE INTERVIEW

Congratulations, Emily on the launch of your perfume collection and thank you for taking the time to speak with me!

1. Emily how did you get involved in perfumery?

I have always been attracted to scented plants, and I had vague plans to learn grow aromatic plants for distillation. This idea was put on hold for a while when I went to live on the little island of Bermuda, where I discovered and worked at the Bermuda Perfumery (the home of Lili Bermuda) for a short while. The Bermuda Perfumery introduced me to the idea that a perfumery can be a small, family run business, and lit a fire in my head. From then on I made it a priority to learn as much as I could, to read everything I could get my hands on, about the science and art of perfume making.

2. What attracted you to natural perfumery?

I love the idea that I am creating scents in the same way that it has been done for hundreds of years. And as I am a lover of all things botanical, creating with natural ingredients seemed the logical thing to do.

I love the idea that I am wearing something on my skin that had (and has!) a life of its own.

3. I hear that South Africa is such a beautiful place. Emily, what is it about South Africa that you love? Also, how long have you lived in South Africa?

Oh, where to start? South Africa is so beautiful, and despite its troubles there is nowhere else quite like it in the world. The geography is quite magnificent and the culture is vibrant and diverse.

I am particularly in love with the amazing and occasionally bizarre plants of the Cape Floral Kingdom the smallest, and richest, of the world’s six floral kingdoms. The mountain ranges around my home also provide endless inspiration.

I moved to South Africa from Zimbabwe with my family when I was a child and it has been my home for twenty years.

4. What inspired you to create the ROSE EN BOS PERFUME COLLECTION?

The four perfumes of the Rose en Bos Collection represent a very personal exploration and interpretation of the alchemy of scent, as inspired by the southernmost tip of the African continent.

Imithi is an ode to the forests, a woody aromatic fragrance evocative of jungles and glades.

Rose & Vines is directly inspired by the vineyards and rose hedges of the Western Cape winelands, a floral oriental of predominantly rosy oils, woody notes and a just a hint of cognac.

Dark Heart is a sultry and spicy fragrance that evokes the romance and mystery of an African night.

Viridescent is fresh citrus scent which embodies a breeze across the mountains on a gloriously sunny day.

5. Do you see the need for more natural perfumers in South Africa?

The concept of natural perfumery is still very new in South Africa, and not widely known. However there is an interest in natural products and I definitely think there is room for development.

6. Emily, you chose ROSE & VINE to be an eau de toilette, why is that?

While I love all my perfumes, Rose &Vines is my absolute favorite… Eventually I intend to make eau de toilette versions of the others as well.

7. Lastly, Emily what is your message as a perfumer and owner of WESTERN CAPE PERFUMERY regarding your debut perfume collection?

The name of my perfume house says it all: the ‘Rose’, the quintessential queen of flowers and the ‘Bos’, a South African word meaning at once the bush, the veld, and the fynbos. These two symbols represent a marriage of European and African sensibilities; traditional French perfume-making inspired by Southern Africa, and made with as many local ingredients as possible.

In this way my perfumes are an extension of myself and my identity.

DARK HEART PARFUM INTERVIEW...

1. Emily, what inspired you to create DARK HEART PARFUM?

I wanted to create a fragrance that contained chocolate notes but not one that made you smell like a chocolate!

2. Could you describe briefly the ingredients in DARK HEART?

Dark Heart is made with Jasmine Sambac, Pink Moroccan Rose and Cocao Absolute, with base notes of Rock Rose and Sandalwood. The result is rich, spicy, and sultry. Dark Heart is a solid perfume blended into a base of organic African Baobab oil and beeswax.

3. What is it about chocolate that you love?

Emily Luchetti, award winning chef is quoted as saying “After eating chocolate you feel godlike, as though you can conquer enemies, lead armies, entice lovers…”

While this might not always be the case, nothing puts me in a good mood like a little chocolate! The smell is rich and sumptuous and carries such wonderfully positive connotations.

4. How difficult or easy is it to acquire ingredients in South Africa to make a fragrance?

South Africa is a country diverse not only in culture but also in geography and climate. South Africa has a growing bio-oil extraction industry and good quality oils from many plants are readily available. I am lucky in that I live in an area where many plants are grown for distillation and export to foreign markets.

I do of course import some ingredients from other countries, but this is easy enough thanks to the internet.

A VALENTINE'S DAY SERIES ALL MONTH

      CHOCOLATES from around the WORLD:

A four-part series on natural perfumers

                          PART THREE

This has truly been the beginning of a very successful year for Italian perfumer, Hilde Soliani. Ms. Soliani is a Master perfumer who inherited her grandmother’s talent for perfumery. So, far this year, Ms. Soliani has created several fragrances that received raved reviews and more new perfume creations to come. However, before having such a busy year in 2011, Ms. Soliani created two chocolate eau de parfums with one being created with roses and the other inspired by her grandmother’s recipe.

Hilde Soliani born and raised in Italy is the owner, of HILDE SOLIANI PROFUMI. Ms. Soliani was raised with inspiration from loving family members who have a passion for perfumery…natural perfumery.

I was amazed at the details of these two chocolate fragrances and how delicate each accord was blended to leave a lasting impression for the most astute connoisseur.

CiocoRosissimo Eau de Parfum is a gourmet scented creation filled with delicate roses and a plush scent of chocolate that blends together evenly and smoothly. CiocoRosissimo is made with Damask rose, fresh grass, vanilla, Bulgarian rose, chocolate, cocoa, wood notes and English rose.

This is an elegant fragrance that will take you from morning to evening without a change in clothing and that is because it last for over eight hours!

The next fragrance from HILDE SOLIANI PROFUMI is built around family. This sacred fragrance is inspired by a recipe belonging to Ms. Soliani’s grandmother. CiocoSpesizissimo Eau de Parfum

is based on liqueur with notes of spices, basil, pepper, white and dark chocolate, tomato leaf and woody notes. This scent is a bit peppery with the sensation of white and dark chocolate billowing with calming effects like a warm soup.

CiocoSpesisissimo Eau de Parfum can be worn from morning to evening and it leaves you with the memory of what inspired Ms. Soliani to create this fragrance.

What better way to inspire love, then to continue the tradition of perfumery shown by a grandparent.

Hilde Soliani reminds me so much of natural perfumer, Mandy Aftel due to creating fragrances using essences of food and using it to produce beautiful gourmand fragrances.

It was a pleasure to speak more with Ms. Soliani about these fragrances and life as a perfumer.

THE INTERVIEW…

1. Hilde, regarding CiocoRosissimo Eau de Parfum, you have three types of roses centered on chocolate. What is it about chocolate and roses that blend so well?

These notes combined are sweet and peppery. However, it was a challenge to create.

2. What do you admire about chocolate?

The history behind it. It is coming from different countries; with different roots and taste. However, once chocolate is roasted, then it is completely different. Chocolate has a soul and it has changed my life.

3. Hilde, regarding CiocoSpesizissimo Eau de Parfum, the fragrance is based off your grandmother’s liqueur recipe. How did you discover the recipe and what is it that inspired you to make a perfume?

The recipe is very common in Parma (Italy). It uses a very rare kind of basil. The inspiration comes from drinking the liqueur in the garden in the summertime by sunset and in the winter time drinking it after lunch or dinner around the table with family and good friends.

The GIVEAWAY is from Friday, February 18th through Tuesday, March 1, 2011.

UPDATE: There are two winners for the Pure Perfume Oil. Shelly Rust is the winner of DEATH BY CHOCOLATE and Monica Hsaio is the winner of CRAVING.
CONGRATULATIONS! to both winners and enjoy the beautiful fragrances.

         CHOCOLATES from around the WORLD:

A four-part series on natural perfumers

                                             PART TWO

I was so delighted when I first read about Ambrosia Jones a few years ago. When I connected her via email, I immediately felt warmth and a true connoisseur with a passion for all that is good.

DEATH BY CHOCOLATE
Not only is Ms. Jones a very nice lady but she is so smart. Ms. Jones is a business owner, natural perfumer, writer, a Bachelors degree in nursing, a healer with training in aromatherapy and a Chinese massage therapist. Wow, this is amazing!

What I really admire, Ms. Jones about is her passion in natural perfumery with over twenty years of success!

Ms. Jones is located in Sydney, Australia with a private perfume house called PERFUME BY NATURE. I read it is on the central coast of Australia just two hours outside of Sydney in a beautiful area.

While most people would be outside taken in the scenery of beautiful Sydney, Australia, Ms. Jones is busy in her studio created mouthwatering chocolate perfumes such as DEATH BY CHOCOLATE EAU DE TOILETTE and CRAVING EAU DE TOILETTE.
CRAVING

Don’t let the name, DEATH BY CHOCOLATE fool you. You will not be overwhelmed by syrupy texture fragrance notes that would make you dizzy in the head, but you will be overcome by a deep warming sensation of a brownie. It like a wonderful chewy brownie that is not too sweet but melts in your mouth with the right amount of pure cocoa absolute with a hint of oak and spice.

It is a new way of experiencing a homemade brownie with nuts!

DEATH BY CHOCOLATE works so well with your body chemistry. I cannot get over the warm sensation of it and it stays on four hours with no flat “after smell”.

If you are “craving” something more adventurous and more daring, then I suggest CRAVING for you.

CRAVING is described as being an “animalistic” fragrance because of the musk scent to it and that is why it was part of the “Mystery of Musk” Project that was run by the Natural Perfumers Guild.

CRAVING received wonderful reviews for its use of cocoa, vanilla, honey, caramel and coffee notes that makes it a superb gourmand fragrance.

Ms. Jones definitely created this fragrance with a lot of warmth because it too stays on for hours and the musk note stays strong.

I was so impressed by these two fragrances that I had to speak with Ms. Jones more about her inspirations and years of dedication to perfumery.

Ambrosia Jones

            THE INTERVIEW...

Hello Ambrosia! Thank you so much for your time I truly appreciate it!

1. I read on your blog that you are a lover of chocolate. Was there anything else other than your love of chocolate that made you create DEATH by CHOCOLATE and CRAVING Perfumes?

Well, chocolate is something that for most people has incredibly pleasant connotations...chocolate makes us feel happy, sensual, loved, spoiled...and it is these feelings that I wanted to explore to see if they translated into scent form."Death by Chocolate" is a study on the scent of cocoa itself....it is a very pure scent, chocolate without being sweet, chocolate that is elegant and refined....In "Craving" the cocoa is a bynote, combined with a number of other lucsious food ie notes...caramel, hazelnut and a very exotic Araibian Oud and musk base. The Cocoa here is more to accentuate the sensual nature of the perfume...and a play on the connection between sex and food, grin! The idea was to create a perfume that stimulated and tantalized all of the senses....

2. DEATH by CHOCOLATE reminds me of a fudge brownie dripping with gooey  caramel sauce. Simply divine. How difficult, Ambrosia was it to capture the  essence of chocolate and making it smells so edible?

Grin, I'm glad you think I did a good job of it! I spent a lot of time experiementing with different combinations and ingredients...

3. Ambrosia, I am feeling very hungry right now! You added musk, roasted hazelnuts and an very interesting ingredient...dark sultry cocoa liquor in CRAVING. What exactly is cocoa liquor?

The cocoa liquoer is a fragrance accord or note rather than an ingredient. It is the smell of cocoa liquor that is created by the combination of a number of ingredients, including cocoa absolute and Oud...

4. What are some of the things you love about being a natural perfumer?

What don't I love.... The ingredients themselves are probably the most beautiful thing about this art form....I love flowers and herbs and have rather a large collection of them growing in my garden too...and using ingredients from plants and flowers I know deeply and understand and connect to makes it more..intimate I guess you couldsay...It also means that I can make use of the emotional and physical effects of the oils and absolutes as well as their scent attributes when I am designing a perfume..."Craving" for instance has a number of oils with sensual aphrodisiac properties in it...

 5. I know you are aware of the restrictions for perfumers, especially natural perfumers to conform to laws about what is prohibited in perfumes. How have you manage to work around or with these laws to continue to create what nature intended?

Well, the laws surrounding perfume are many, varied and contradictory. I don't wholesale in Europe yet, so I'm not restricted by the EU regulations which are enough to give anyone a headache! IFRA restrictions are a voluntary agreement amongst a large number of conventional perfume companies and not laws as such. (yet), and seems to be mainly based around promoting  the use of artificial chemical substitutes for a large number of perfectly safe natural oils that have been used in herbal medicine and traditional perfumery for thousands of years. It seems to be driven by a number of large perfume ingredient manufacturers with a vested interest in selling their own substitutes for natural rose otto eg, rather than research of commonsense. The actual laws that govern cosmetic manufacturing the world over are on  the line of not using harmful or toxic ingredients. Which I don't have a problem with. If anything, I think they aren't strict enough when you look at some of the substances commonly used in conventional perfumes nowadays...I follow my own far stricter guidelines and those more commonly held among Aromatherapists, herbalists and the Natural Perfumers guild.

Thank you so much again, Ambrosia. This has been a wonderful interview. I wish you continued success and I look forward to more wonderful perfume creations from you.

Thank you for the interview Felicia, it's lovely to have an opportunity to about my perfume obsession!

A VALENTINE DAY SERIES ALL MONTH LONG

 CHOCOLATES from around the World:
A four part series on natural perfumers
Chances are you have eaten chocolate ice cream, a chocolate candy bar or strawberries dipped in chocolate. Most of us had all three and cannot deny on how delicious it is.
Here is the one million dollar question. Have you worn a natural perfume made with chocolate? If so, then you are a true perfumista. If not, let me introduce you to four amazing perfumers from around the world that will inspire you to seek natural and organic perfumes.
These perfumers have three distinct similarities that cannot be overlooked. First, they are all passionate natural perfumers, secondly, they have created perfumes made with chocolate and third, they are “The Leading Ladies” of natural perfumery.
The first leading lady is Mandy Aftel, perfumer from the United States of America, Ambrosia Jones, perfumer from Australia, Hilde Soliani, perfumer from Italy and Introducing for the very first time, perfumer Emily Pienaar of South Africa.
Mandy Aftel
Each of these perfumers have dedicated themselves to the Art of Perfumery and this four part series consisting of an article and interview throughout the month of February will showcase their skills and art form in creating a perfume using chocolate.
Mandy Aftel is renowned for her creation and passion to natural perfumery. Ms. Aftel is owner of  a studio in Berkeley, California named, AFTELIER PERFUMES. She is not only a Master Perfumer, but an author of several books including the best seller, ESSENCE AND ALCHEMY: A NATURAL HISTORY OF PERFUME published in 2004 by Gibbs Smith.
Ms. Aftel is featured in print and online publications, perfume blogs and her perfume creations can be found in exclusive shops, boutiques and online niche fragrance sites just to name a few.
This particular series will focus on one of Ms. Aftel finest creations, CACAO PERFUME that features the cocoa bean in its bliss.
CACAO was created in small batches by hand using the only pure botanical essences from around the world. CACAO is a unisex fragrance that Ms. Aftel was so detailed in  creating  by making a chocolate alcohol that is used as the foundation and then Steve De Vries, friend and Master Chocolatier carefully selected organic cocoa beans from Costa Rica.
CACAO PERFUME is made with Top Notes: blood orange, pink grapefruit  Heart Notes: jasmine sambac, grandiflorum  Base Notes: chocolate, vanilla
I spoke with Ms. Aftel further during a phone conversation about her amazing perfume creation, CACAO and what inspires and motivates a world renowned perfumer with over 15 years in the industry.

  THE INTERVIEW
Mandy, what is it about chocolate that you like?
Extraordinary! Chocolate is a perfume all by itself. The taste is multi-facet…it is smooth and it has so many notes in it. It a sensual overload.
Do you feel dark chocolate is the most healthy?
Yes, it is the healthiest. It has many healthy benefits and it is so delicious.

What do you like most about CACAO PERFUME?
As a customer, pleasing me is not easy. CACAO is like another facet. It like a book of poems, it has to fit together. I look at so many things to make but he (Steve De Vries) finds them for me which is exquisite. The vanilla beans in CACAO are from Tahiti and these beans are very floral. The cocoa beans from Costa Rica have the best chocolate aroma, using cocoa absolute would not have given the same effect.

Mandy, what inspired you to create CACAO?
Chocolate is floral and CACAO is made with two kinds of jasmine. It has chocolate on the edge and the citrus jasmine combined with vanilla. It is the aroma that I like.

What do you want the woman or man wearing CACAO PERFUME to experience?
The pleasure and to feel happy wearing it.

AMBAR is translating AMBER

Posted by Unknown 07 February, 2011 0 comments

                                        AMBAR PERFUME

The celebration of a fragrance: Thirty Five years in Creativity with an EXCLUSIVE interview of Marie Salamagne

Jesus del Pozo, the Madrid born fashion designer known for colorful fashions with flair and sophistication recently launched his NEW fragrance, AMBAR PERFUME to celebrate 35 years in the fashion industry.

AMBAR PERFUME is centered on the amber note that is far too known for being dark and mysterious. This fragrance has a different outlook with its 21st century version of amber that translates into a lighter scent for women and fashionable representation of Jesus del Pozo’s signature designs.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, Jesus del Pozo appoints perfumer, Marie Salamagne of   FIRMENICH-PARIS to compose a scent that evokes the elements of transition into the 21st century without compromising Mr. Del Pozo’s artistic flair.

Ms. Salamagne exquisitely atones to the task with vibrant notes of Top Note: cardamom, bergamot, and tangerineMiddle Note: iris, tea, peonyBase Note: Virginia cedar, sage and amber

Here I speak with Ms. Salamagne during an interview on what it means to be a part of over three decades of celebration.

    The Interview

1. Marie, how long have you been a perfumer? Secondly, what is it about being a perfumer that you love?

I entered Firmenich in 2001 just after school and in 2005 I was nominated perfumer of Fine fragrance.

What I love about my job is the allowed freedom and creativity ! It surprises me every day when I discover a new raw material, or when I create innovative combinations in order to create new original fragrances.

I also love my autonomy as much as the possibilities to be enriched when I meet with other creative people, such as Jesus Del Pozo, that inspire me for new creations.

2. Marie you were honored as the perfumer for AMBAR Perfume by Jesus Del Pozo. Congratulations to you! When you asked to create an amber fragrance, what were the first things that came to mind?

For a designer like Jesus del Pozo I was willing to create an ambar of the 21st century, combining a bewitching trail with a both modern and timeless elegance. I wanted it to be radiant and signed with a bursting freshness.

3. I notice that most amber fragrances are described as dark, mysterious, musky. Do you feel that way? Is amber really a "dark", "sultry" scent or is that a term used loosely?

I agree that ambar is often treated in its most sensual and wrapping aspects but depending on which raw materials you combine it with, you will make it darker or more luminous. For J. DEL POZO AMBAR, I was willing to create a tension between a sensual luminous ambar and an unusual citrusy freshness to create a fresh ambar… to take ambar where you don’t expected it.

4. I read that AMBAR Perfume was launched to celebrate Jesus Del Pozo's 35 years of creativity! Marie, what should a women wearing this fragrance feel or experience?

The women wearing AMBAR should feel modern and elegant, with the great satisfaction of wearing an unconventional fragrance.

Fragrance Belles-Lettres Est 2009 CHICAGO

The word "belles lettres" is a French phrase meaning "beautiful or "fine writing. Since this is a term to describe a category of writing, this will pertain to my passion about fragrances. I will review niche, natural, artisan and designer perfumes from all over the world. I write with passion but will use my journalistic skills that I obtained in college. Not only will I feature fragrances but I will feature new books on fragrances/perfumes, fragrance events and interview authors and perfumers.

I hope you take this journey with me and begin your own passion for the ART OF PERFUMERY!

Fragrance Belles-Lettres Magazine is a division of Noblesse Luxe Publication.
