It's not an OUTLAW...It is a privilege
This is the fourth review for the Natural Perfumers Guilds'-OUTLAW PROJECT. This review is full of colorful perfume notes that represents a woman born in western Europe and that same woman who later was known for being from the Far East.
Margaretha Geertruida Zelle was born on August 7, 1876 in Holland. She was the daughter of a Dutchman and a Javanese mother whom her father met while working in the Far East. Margaretha grew up to be a beautiful young woman with a sense of her own style that was totally unconventional to those in the Netherlands. Nevertheless, Margaretha tried to make the best of both worlds but her desire in life was to do more exciting things. After she settled down and married a Dutch naval officer but the marriage did not last due to Margaretha's lust for a better life than what the Netherlands had to officer, she began a lifestyle full of intrigue as a 'double agent'.
As the story goes, she transformed herself into an exotic dancer and courtesan from the Far East, named Mata-Hari. Mata-Hari wore jeweled sequence costumes that consisted of a crown shaped beaded headdress, a bra full of colorful crystals and pants of sheer light material. She on stage was held as a goddess and Mata-Hari this and her seductive skills to gain secrets from the enemy. Mata-Hari used this device until she was caught by the French espionage in World War I and executed by the firing squad.
There are researchers who indicate that her escapade as a 'double agent' never happened. This maybe the case, but DSH owner and perfumer, Dawn Spencer-Hurwitz wrote her own version of the story with an epic of all natural ingredients considered to be an "outlaw". Ms. Hurwitz named her biography, Mata-Hari.
This heart-wrenching story of Mata-Hari opens up with the freshness and optimistic look on life by Margaretha. It continues with fruit head notes and then the biography elaborates in the body of the story using botanical fruit accords and the story intensifies with exotic notes and finally the story ends with a dramatic closure of aromas that represents Mata-Hari who was determined to get what she wanted out of life, even if he killed her.
Mata-Hari perfume is a Chypre fragrance that represents the early 20th century. During that time Chypre perfumes were very popular. This fragrance consists of over 15 restricted perfume notes that gives the live and vivid look into the life of Mata-Hari.
Ms. Spencer did a superb job at orchestrating every detail down to the last scent. To me it seemed as if she had been writing the biography of Mata-Hari with fragrances for years. It is so direct and to the point that it seems so unrealistic that it was simply made for the Outlaw Project.

Ms, Hurwitz |
I have known Ms. Spencer for two years and each and every time, her God given talent gets better and better. I am always overwhelmed by her passion, details to her idea concepts and the outcome of the idea concepts. Mata-Hari perfume lingers all day with exotic notes that represent the beautiful traditions of the Far East.
